Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX850 Preview

By

Panasdonic_GX850_front_1200px.jpgPanasonic continues to update their compact, Micro Four Thirds offerings with the new LUMIX DMC-GX850. While labeled the GX850, this is essentially the GF9, the successor to their popular GF8 model from 2016. That being said, many of the features from its predecessor remain, however Panasonic has made some improvements (many borrowed from the G85) that are sure to please the "selfie" crowd.

Speaking of selfies, that seems to be the direction Panasonic chose for the GX850. For those who can resist a duck pose in front of their favorite restaurant, the GX850 offers a 180 degree tilting touchscreen LCD; giving you the perfect view, or well you. In addition, they've added various selfie specific options, which are accessed with the camera's new Self Shot mode. These include a new 4K Selfie mode, as well as beauty filters that "enable users to shoot portraits more attractively and after shooting, aesthetic/make-up retouching can even be applied in the camera with the Beauty Retouch function. Users can also choose to capture the background clearly or defocused depending on the situation with the new Background Control mode. Panorama pictures can be shot in Self Shot mode." When the LCD is flipped up, the camera will automatically enter Self Shot mode, allowing for hands-free selfies thanks to both "Face Shutter" and "Buddy Shutter" options.

For those who are just looking for an affordable, yet powerful mirrorless ILC, the GX850 delivers. It features the same 16-megapixel sensor found on the recently reviewed DMC-G85, which offers excellent overall image quality, thanks partly to the fact that the sensor does not have a Low Pass filter. This sensor, in combination with their latest Venus Engine, allows the GX850 to deliver excellent image quality, fast shooting performance, and high-quality 4K UHD video recording. The Venus Engine also allows you to shoot with a broad sensitivity range, up to ISO 25,600.

Like their other new cameras for 2017, the GX850 includes their new Depth From Defocus technology, which they claim increases AF speeds "by exchanging digital signals between the camera and the lens at a maximum of 240 fps, resulting in ultra-fast auto focusing of approx. 0.07 sec."

As with most of Panasonic's ILC offerings, the GX850 is loaded with various exposure options, as well as several 4K photo and video modes, including 4K Burst, 4K Burst (Start/Stop), and 4K Pre-burst. Speaking of burst shooting, the 4K Burst option allows you to capture 8-megapixel images at up to 30fps!
