Panasonic has announced the ZS70, its latest Travel Zoom ZS series camera for 2017. This 30x optical zoom all-in-one may have the long reach of a super-telephoto lens, but this compact body will -- when powered off -- also fit inside jacket pockets, purses, and carry-on bags. In other words, if you want to take sharper, more vibrant images than your smartphone, but don't want to lug around a full sized DSLR, you may want to consider a Lumix DC-ZS70.
Why? It has a larger image sensor than your typical smartphone -- a 20.3MP High Sensitivity MOS image sensor to be specific -- that when coupled with Panasonic's Venus Engine image processor and the LEICA 30x optical zoom lens, means the ZS70 will perform better in low light, be able to capture sharper images, and do all of this faster than your phone. Plus, it's more affordable than buying a new smartphone and the 24-720mm equivalent zoom range offers a TON of flexibility.
The ZS70 can shoot full resolution still images at up to 10fps with AutoFocus locked, and up to 5fps with continuous AF engaged, but if you use 4K PHOTO mode, which produces 8MP still images, you can reach speeds of up to 30fps. The ZS70 also boasts a 3.0" tilting touchscreen rear display that, when folded up 180-degrees, engages Selfie Shot mode. There's another 4K PHOTO mode within Selfie Shot mode too, along with Beauty Retouching options (soften skin tones, defocus areas, slim subjects, etc), Background Control, and Panorama.
Still images can also be captured in the uncompressed RAW format, with or without Creative Control filters, or using the Post Focus feature, which allows you to select your exact focal point AFTER shooting an image. Focus Stacking goes one step further, combining multiple images captured with Post Focus. And, there's even a Light Composition mode that, after taking a base photo, only adds newer, brighter pixels -- it's an easier way to get light trails at night from moving objects like auto headlights.
If you plan to shoot videos, the ZS70 can record QFHD 4K videos in 3840 x 2160 at up 30p as well as Full 1080p HD videos; it also, via 4K Live Cropping, allows you to in-camera create a 1080p video with zooms and pans from previously recorded 4K videos.
