Panasonic is one of the world's largest consumer electronics makers, producing everything from televisions and DVD players to microwave ovens and electric shavers. Although a multinational corporation today, Panasonic was first known as Matsushita Housewares Devices Manufacturing Works back in 1918, making two-way sockets and attachment plugs while working out of a two-story house. Compared to most of the major digital camera manufacturers, Panasonic is a relative newcomer to the camera business.
In 1997, Panasonic introduced its first digital camera, the Card Shot, which used a 2MB CompactFlash memory card for storage. In 2001, the company released the Lumix DMC-LC5, notable for its lens made by Leica, the respected German camera brand. Panasonic's partnership with Leica would be a pivotal move for their fledgling camera business as Lumix cameras have gone on to receive wide acclaim and a steadily increasing market share.
Panasonic Lumix cameras, which have spearheaded the use of optical image stabilizers in compacts, are spread out over several different series, from the entry-level LS series models to the high-end LX and FS series cameras. Panasonic also produces the Lumix G series, a line of innovative DSLRs that includes lightweight Micro Four Thirds hybrid models.
