The Stylus Tough 8000 is equipped with a 3.6x (35mm equivalent: 28-102mm) wide-angle optical zoom lens gives you greater versatility. It is made up of 10 Lenses in 8 Groups, 2 Aspherical Lenses, 1 ED Lenses. The lens zooms internally and is protected by a sliding lens barrier when powered down.
The CCD contrast-detect auto focus system covers from:
- Normal mode: 19.7" - infinity (0.5m - infinity)
Macro mode: Wide: 3.9" - infinity (0.1m - infinity) Tele: 11.8" - infinity (0.3m - infinity)
Super Macro mode: .8" - 19.7" (2cm - 50cm)
The built in speedlight features Auto, Red-eye reduction, Fill and Forced Off modes. To the right is the LED illuminator, which can be used as the Self-timer light, a Focus assist lamp, as well as a flash light. The camera does not automatically use the LED as an AF assist lamp, except in S-Macro LED focus mode. You have to manually turn it on in all other modes. The LED lamp can even be enabled while the camera is off, allowing you to use it as a flash light.
The maximum flash range at ISO 800 is:
Wide: 0.33ft (0.1m) - 13.1ft (4.0m)
Tele: 0.98ft (0.3m) - 8.9ft (2.7m)
Two types of Red-eye reduction are offered:
- The Red-eye reduction flash mode ON when taking the picture to reduce the effects of red-eye.
- The Red-Eye Fix function in the Perfect Touch Playback menu, after the photo has been taken so you can easily fix the picture even after it's been shot.
On the top is the Power button and Shutter Release.
There is no optical viewfinder, you frame, review and perform menu operations on this new 2.7-inch HyperCrystal LCD III monitor with approx. 230,000 pixels of resolution and 5 levels of adjustable brightness.
Controls on the back: Top is the zoom control which also functions as the magnified playback and index mode when in play mode. The Mode dial has positions for iAuto, Program, SCeNe, Beauty, Movie and Playback. Next is the 4-way selector, which is used to navigate menu screens and select images for playback. In record mode the 'Up' button changes exposure compensation, 'Left' enables the macro focus modes, 'Right' changes the flash mode and the 'Down' button enables the self-timer. The OK/FUNCtion button accepts menu selections and gives access to the Function shortcut menu. The MENU button calls up and dismisses the menu system. There's also a dedicated Playback mode button. The DISPlay button controls the amount of information displayed on the camera's LCD in both record and playback mode as well as acts as the help function when navigating the menu, and holding it down turns on the LED Illuminator. Lastly, we have the OR button that brings you to a menu that allows you to change Panorama mode, Tap Control Settings, Shadow Adjustment and the Multi Window preview.
The multi I/O connector on the side handles not only the USB 2.0 (High-speed) connectivity but the Audio/Video output (NTSC or PAL) as well.A black rubber O-ring covers the I/O port when the door is snapped shut. The Door features a locking mechanism to ensure the door shuts and is water tight. The Stylus Tough 8000 is Waterproof, allowing you to submerge the camera up to 33ft (10m). This seal is also found on the battery and memory card door.
Approx. Storage Capacities:
Power is supplied by a proprietary LI-50B 3.7v 925mAh Li-ion battery pack. Olympus claims a fully charged pack will allow you to capture up to 250 shots. The included (D-7AC) AC charger lets you recharge one battery while using another. Lithium battery packs can be charged or 'topped off' at any time without shortening the service life of the battery.
