Olympus's Stylus 7040 is a "Hybrid" camera, meaning that the camera is always ready to capture both still images and record video, thanks to separate video record and shutter release buttons. Unless you turn off all of the information, you will see the image and video record size as well as the number of images remaining as well as the amount of recording time that is left on the selected memory source in the bottom right corner.
In order to make this camera as easy to use as possible, Olympus has added an in-camera manual so you can look up a function and learn about the camera at any time, the only thing you have to do is press the "?" button on the back.
By combining the menu and quick menu options into a single button, you won't have to remember which button works which menu. If the setting you are looking for is not in the quick menu, you will have to select the "setup" option at the bottom to enter the main menu.
There is not a mode dial or switch on the outside of the camera. Choosing you shooting mode is done within the quick menu. Scrolling through with the 4-way controller or the rotary dial around it to select the mode you are looking for. The choices of modes are: Program, iAuto, SCeNe, Magic, Panorama Assist and Beauty.
When you select the "SCeNe" mode, you list of scene modes will appear directly beneath it and can be selected the same way. The SCeNe modes are: Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Night + Portrait, Sport, Indoor, Candle, Self-Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Documents, Beach & Snow and Pet.
