Record Screens & Menus

Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The PEN E-PM2 kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the display screen.

When shooting in iAuto mode with the Olympus PEN E-PM2, you will have very limited access to the camera's settings. Press the Info button on the back right panel of the camera to change which data is shown on the screen. You can remove all data and data icons, or show only a pull-out menu tab along the right side of the screen. The iAuto icon is in the lower left corner of the screen and the number of photos remaining to be shot are in the lower right corner. The shutter speed and aperture setting are listed along the bottom of the screen.

In these photos of the E-PM2's LCD screen, you'll notice the widescreen 16:9 aspect of this LCD.

When shooting in an advanced mode with the E-PM2, such as the Program mode shown here, you'll see a similar set of data to what's displayed in iAuto. However, you can more easily make changes to the settings in advanced shooting modes. Press the OK button on the back of the camera, and you'll see the popup menu along the right side of the screen, with detailed menus along the bottom of the screen, such as for sequential (or burst) shooting and white balance settings, as shown here.

The options on the popup menu along the right side of the screen are:

  • Focal Length - Off, S-IS 1, S-IS 2, S-IS 3

Olympus offers quite a few special effects -- also called Art Effects -- with this PEN Mini 2 camera. These are a lot of fun to try when you're seeking a unique look in an image. As you make each selection from the on-screen menus, the LCD will change to show you what the effect will look like. The Art Effects are:

  • 1 - I-Enhance
  • 2 - Vivid
  • 3 - Natural
  • 4 - Muted
  • 5 - Portrait
  • M - Monotone
  • C - Custom
  • ART 1 - Pop Art
  • ART 2 - Soft Focus
  • ART 3 - Pale & Light Color
  • ART 4 - Light Tone
  • ART 5 - Grainy Film
  • ART 6 - Pin Hole
  • ART 7 - Diorama
  • ART 8 - Cross Process
  • ART 9 - Gentle Sepia
  • ART 10 - Dramatic Tone
  • ART 11 - Key Line
  • ART 12 - Watercolor

Record GIF - scene modes.gif
For those who want to simplify the shooting modes, Olympus has included nearly two dozen scene modes with the E-PM2, available through on-screen menus. You just select Scene Modes (labeled as SCN) from the main menu on the PEN Mini 2, and you'll have access to each of the scene modes. Pick the scene mode that most closely matches your current scene, and the camera will create automatic settings that will yield the best exposure for that type of scene.

With a scene mode on the screen, press the right side of the four-way button, and the E-PM2 will display a brief explanation of the scene mode, such as shown in the Documents example above. The 23 scene modes are:

  • Portrait
  • e-Portrait
  • Landscape
  • Landscape + Portrait
  • Sport
  • Night Scene
  • Night + Portrait
  • Children
  • High Key
  • Low Key
  • DIS Mode
  • Macro
  • Nature Macro
  • Candle
  • Sunset
  • Documents
  • Panorama
  • Fireworks
  • Beach & Snow
  • Fisheye Effect
  • Wide-Angle
  • Macro
  • 3D Photo

Record GIF - aspect ratio.gif

Olympus has included five different aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 3:2, 1:1, 3:4) with the PEN E-PM2, and you can pick the one you want from the on-screen menus. Keep in mind that the 3:4 aspect ratio really isn't going to give you anything different than you could get by turning the camera vertically while shooting at the 4:3 aspect ratio. However, if you're in a spot where the camera is on a tripod head that cannot turn 90 degrees or where you just can't turn the camera vertically, the 3:4 aspect ratio is a handy option.

Within each aspect ratio, you can shoot at several different resolutions in RAW, JPEG, or JPEG + RAW, which you also can pick from the on-screen menus. The JPEG resolution options within each aspect ratio are:

  • 4:3 - 16M, 5M, 1.3M
  • 16:9 - 12M, 3.7M, 1M
  • 3:2 - 14M, 4.3M, 1.1M
  • 1:1 - 12M, 3.7M, 1M
  • 3:4 - 9M, 2.8M, 0.7M

Record GIF - main menu.gif
To access the camera's main menu, just press the menu button on the back of the camera. You'll see the screen as shown above. Just touch the screen on the menu listing for the mode you want to use, and the E-PM2 will enter that mode.

  • Art - Opens the Art Effects menu
  • iAuto - Automatic mode
  • SCN - Scene modes
  • Movie - Video modes
  • P, A, S, M - Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual
  • Setup - Control the camera's overall operation

Record GIF - shooting menu.gif
Press the Setup menu area on the main menu to open the Shooting Menu screens shown above. Most of the camera's shooting controls are available through the popup menus discussed earlier, but there are a few other options in the Shooting Menus. Some of the Shooting Menu options are duplications of what's included in the popup menus. Press the Info button on the back of the camera to see an explanation of the various options.

The options are listed on two pages of Shooting Menus, marked with camera icons 1 and 2 on the left side of the screen. Scroll to the left side of the screen to move between the icons and then scroll back to the right to pick the commands you want to use. The Shooting Menu options are:

  • Card Setup - All Erase, Format

Record - setup menu.jpg
You may be surprised with the lack of options contained in the PEN Mini 2's Setup menu. However, having a limited number of options in this menu is pretty common with Olympus cameras. The Setup menu includes:

  • Date and Time - M/D/Y, D/M/Y, Y/M/D
  • Language
  • LCD Display - Brightness (-7 to +7 in increments of 1), Temperature (-7 to +7 in increments of 1)
  • Rec View - Auto, Off, 0.3 sec, 0.5 sec, and 1 to 20 seconds in 1 second intervals
  • Menu Display - Custom Menu (On, Off), Accessory Port Menu (On, Off)
  • Firmware
If you choose to turn on the Custom menu or the Accessory Port menu, you'll see additional icon tabs along the left side of the menu screen for these menus.

Record - movie.jpg
With the E-PM2, Olympus did not include a separate menu screen for controlling movie settings during recording.

The movie recording screen is pretty basic. After you press the movie recording button, you'll see a red REC icon in the lower left corner, along with the current mode. The amount of time the recording has been going is shown in the lower right corner.
