Camera menu options:

  • Saturation - CS0-CS4 set the saturation level. CM1-CM4 emphasizes certain colors. 5 levels of saturation. CM1 sets red tint, CM2 green, CM3 blue, CM4 softer red than CM1. Saturation level and tint cannot be set at same time.
  • Contrast - Lo, -1/2, Normal, +1/2, Hi
  • Sharpness - Lo, -1/2, Normal, +1/2, Hi
  • Color Space - sRGB or Adobe RGB
  • White Balance Bracketing - Off, 3 frames 2 steps, 4 steps, 6 steps
  • RAW + JPEG - Capture both formats: Off, On
  • Noise Filter - Eliminate random image noise: Off, On
  • Noise Reduction - Long exposure noise reduction: Off, On
  • Shading Compensation - Compensate for dark areas at the edge of image caused by wide angle lenses: Off, On
  • AF Illuminator - Focus-assist lamp: Off, On
  • Anti-Shock - Mirror lock up timer: Off, 1s, 2s, 3s, ... 30s
  • Pixel Mapping - Map out bad CCD imager pixels
  • Flash Compensation - Adjusts flash output +/-2 in 1/3 steps

Playback menu options:

  • Slideshow - Begin automated slideshow playback in single or multi-frame mode
  • Auto Rotate - Enable image rotation with the sub dial
  • RAW Data Edit - Perform processing on RAW images, white balance or sharpness and then saves TIFF or JPEG image to card.
  • DPOF - Store print reservation information (# of prints, date/time and index prints)

Setup1 menu options:

  • EV Step - 1/3EV, 1/2EV or 1EV
  • ISO Boost - Off, On enables ISO 1600/3200
  • White Balance Tuning - Fine tune white balance for the 12 preset kelvin settings (3000 - 7500 K) in 7 steps (20° K per step)
  • SQ - Setup the SQ image size (640x480, 1024x768, 1280x960, 1600x1200) and JPEG compression level (1:8 or 1:2.7)
  • AEL/AFL - 12 different ways to configure the shutter release and AEL buttons so it provides the function you need (see next frame)
  • Dial - Define function of the main and sub dials in the P, A and S modes
  • Focus Ring - Select direction of the focus ring action
  • S.AF + MF - Enable manual focus adjustment with Single-AF
  • Release Priority S - Release shutter in S-AF mode before focus lock or flash ready
  • Release Priority C - Release shutter in the C-AF mode even while adjusting focus
  • Reset Lens - Resets the focus of the lens when powered down
  • PC Mode - Assign USB mode: Mass Storage or Camera Control
  • Erase Setting - Selects the initial cursor position on the YES/NO screen for erasing pictures.
  • Cleaning Mode - Manually initiate ultrasonic CCD filter cleaner, raise mirror and opens shutter curtain
  • Custom Reset Setting - Up to four custom reset settings can be saved for when the camera is powered down.

AEL - AFL Setting Menu:

This allows you to combine the AEL (AE Lock) button function with the functions performed by pressing the shutter release halfway (focus lock and AE lock) depending on your preferences.

Modes in S-AF mode:

  • Mode 1 - Shutter button function: Pressing halfway locks both focus and exposure. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked while AEL is held down.
  • Mode 2 - Shutter button function: Pressing halfway locks both focus and exposure. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked when AEL is pressed. When AEL is pressed again it is released.
  • Mode 3 - Shutter button function: Pressing halfway locks both focus and exposure. AEL button function: Focus is locked when AEL is pressed. When AEL is pressed again it is released.
  • Mode 4 - Shutter button function: Pressing halfway locks the focus. When the shutter is pressed all the way the picture is taken using the locked exposure value. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked while AEL is held down. The exposure value locked when the AEL is pressed has priority over exposure value locked when the shutter release is pressed all the way.
  • Mode 5 - Shutter button function: Pressing halfway locks the focus. When the shutter is pressed all the way the picture is taken using the locked exposure value. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked when the AEL is pressed. When AEL is pressed again it is released. The exposure value stored has priority over the exposure value locked when the shutter button is pressed all the way.

Modes in C-AF mode:

  • Mode 6 - Shutter button function: Pressing halfway locks the exposure value. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked when the AEL is pressed. When AEL is pressed again it is released. Exposure value locked when AEL pressed has priority over exposure value locked when shutter is pressed halfway.
  • Mode 7 - Shutter button function: When the shutter is pressed all the way the picture is taken using the locked focus and exposure value. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked while you hold the AEL button. The exposure value stored in memory takes priority over the exposure value locked when the shutter button is pressed halfway.

Modes in MF mode:

  • Mode 1 - Shutter button function: Pressing the shutter halfway locks exposure value. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked while AEL is held down. The exposure value locked when AEL is pressed has priority over exposure value locked when the shutter is pressed all the way.
  • Mode 2 - Shutter button function: Pressing the shutter halfway locks exposure value. AEL button function: Exposure value is locked when AEL button is pressed (AE memory). When AEL is pressed again it is canceled. The exposure value stored in memory has priority over the exposure value locked when the shutter is pressed halfway.
  • Mode 3 - Shutter button function: Pressing the shutter halfway locks exposure value. AEL button function: AF operates while you hold down the AEL button. After releasing the AEL button the focus can be adjusted in either direction with the focus ring.
  • Mode 4 - Shutter button function: Shooting is performed using the exposure value locked while you hold down the AEL button. The exposure value locked when AEL is pressed has priority over the exposure value locked when the shutter is pressed all the way.
  • Mode 5 - Shutter button function: Shooting is performed using the exposure value locked when the shutter button is pressed all the way. AEL button function: The exposure value is locked when the AEL button is pressed (AE memory). When AEL is pressed again AE memory is cancelled. The exposure value stored in AE memory has priority over the exposure value locked when the shutter is pressed all the way.

Setup2 menu options:

  • Time and Date - Set the camera's clock
  • Filename - If Auto it will continuously increment, Reset will reset the numbers
  • Rec View - View on LCD after capture: Off, Auto, 5s, 20s
  • Beep Sounds - Button soundsL Off, On
  • LCD Brightness - Adjust LCD backlight
  • Sleep - Auto off time: Off, 1m, 3m, 5m, 10m
  • Card Setup - Format CF card
  • Language - Menu language
  • Video Out - NTSC or PAL format

The E-1 can be set to display a simple review image as shown above with blinking highlight warning or you can select one of the following displays by pressing the INFO button and rotating the sub dial on the back.

This is the full information display, it shows exposure mode, metering mode, image quality, ISO speed, color space, lens focal length, shutter speed, aperture, exposure and flash compensation, white balance, AE Bracketing step value, contrast and sharpness settings.

The Index mode allows for display of 4, 9 or 16 thumbnail images per screen.

The last playback choice is the histogram which shows graphically the contrast and dynamic range of the image. This chart shows a scale of 0 - 255 (left to right) with 0 being black and 255 is white.

To check for critical focus or color you can magnify the image 2x, 3x or 4x and then freely scroll around inside of the enlarged image.
