The AUTO mode is an easy to use fully automatic mode for point-n-shoot use by anyone regardless of their experience level.

When you half-press the shutter the focus is locked, the AF brackets move to the Active AF point. A green icon is also displayed to indicate focus was achieved. The red "lightning bolt" indicates the flash is charged and will fire.

The Program AE mode is also automatic but allows the user to adjust many parameters such as white balance, ISO speed, focus mode and more.

The Manual mode lets you adjust the shutter speed and aperture as desired. The Exposure Value (EV) is indicated and works like a digital light meter.

Scene mode lets you choose from: Self-Portrait, Indoor, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Sunset, Cuisine, Candle, Behind Glass or Available Light Portrait.

When changing exposure modes, flash settings, or focus modes, their function is displayed for a few seconds on the color LCD.

The Macro (close-up) focus mode lets you shoot from 8" - infinity (0.2m - infinity) and as close as 0.8" (20mm) in Super Macro mode.

The Movie record mode screen. The total amount of recording time available is shown by the green "11:47" in the lower right hand corner. We have enough space on the xD card we used for our tests to record for 11 min. and 47 seconds. You can record movies at resolutions of 320x240 or 160x120 with audio. The length of recording is limited only by the amount of space available on the xD card. The zoom can be preset before recording, but it can not be used during.

Pressing the MENU button while in any still recording mode allows you to access the Shortcut menus for Exposure Compensation, White Balance, or Resolution. These menus allow you to quickly change settings while on the go. Pressing the Right button takes you to the full Mode Menu which consists of four sections (CAMERA, PICture, CARD, SETUP)

The CAMERA menu:

    - Enables the selftimer for the shutter release

    - Selects the metering method (ESP, Spot)

    - Choose single frame or sequential modes

    ISO - ISO sensitivity: Auto, 50, 100, 200 or 400

    Digital Zoom - Enable or disable digital zoom option

The PICture menu:

    - Enable or disable sound recording with still images

    Function - Off, B&W, Sepia, Vivid

    Panorama - In-camera panorama mode, only available when using Olympus brand xD-Picture cards.

    2 in 1 - Combines two pictures taken in succession into one "side by side" image

    Noise Reduction - Use with longer shutter speeds to eliminate noise

The CARD menu: Format the xD card or Backup to another xD card.

The SETUP menu:

    All Reset - On resets all camera settings to default when camera is turned off. Off will retain all settings.

    - Select the language for on-screen display

    PW On Setup - Sets the picture/sound displayed at startup

    Rec View - On/Off, if On shows last image captured for about 3 secs.

    - Toggles beep sounds (Off, Low, High)

    Beep - On/Off, if On then make sound when buttons are pushed

    Shutter Sound - Choose sound theme for shutter release

    File Name - Continuous file numbering or reset

    Pixel Mapping - Checks the CCD imager for errors

    - Adjust brightness of LCD monitor

    - Set the time and date

    Video Output - Select NTSC or PAL video format
