Here you can see the screen when using the Live View function. Icons indicate we are using Auto exposure mode, Single frame drive mode, Face Detection AF, Active D-Lighting, RAW+JPEG Large Fine quality, Auto white balance, Sound on for Movie recording, Evaluative metering, 1/60 shutter speed, F4.0 aperture, and ISO Auto. You can also see the battery level indicator and space avaiable for Movies (5 minutes 0 seconds) or Stills (117). Pressing the OK button will start recording a movie.

The D5000 is yet another dSLR that allows you to record motion video. You can shoot at three different resolutions, 1280x720, 640x424 or 320x216, with a frame rate of 24fps. The maximum clip length is up tp 5 minutes or 2GB when using HD mode.

NR - Off (default) or On (enabled when shutter speeds are 8 seconds or slower) High ISO NR - High, Normal (default), Low, Off Active Folder - Create, rename, or delete the folders in which photographs and movie files are stored on the memory card Multiple exposure - Create a single image from 2 or 3 exposures Movie Settings - Choose video settings, see the menu screen above Interval timer shooting - Choose the start time, number of shots, interval between frames, etc. ![]() Custom settings allow you to fine-tune a great number of camera settings and/or button functions to suit your particular needs. To make it easy to get to the settings you want, the Custom Menu is organized into six color-coded groups:

LCD brightness - Adjust LCD back light +3 to -3 Info display format - Select the Info display format (Classic or Graphic) Auto information display - On or Off (set for both Auto/scene or P/S/A/M modes) Info wrap-around - On or Off Clean Image Sensor - Cleans the Low Pass Filter to remove dust and dirt particles Lock Mirror up for cleaning - Lock mirror up for cleaning the low-pass filter manually (the EN-EL3 battery has to have greater than 60% charged) Video mode - Select video output format: NTSC or PAL HDMI - Select the HDMI format: Auto (camera selects appropriate format), 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i Time zone and date - Set the Time zone, date and time, date format, daylight saving time Language - Select the menu language Image comment - Enter a comment that will be embedded in the image information Auto image rotation - Auto rotates portrait mode images for proper video display Image Dust Off ref photo - Capture a photo to be used with Capture NX 2's Dust Off feature GPS - Adjust settings for connection to a GPS unit, like Nikon's GP-1 Firmware Version - Display the camera's current firmware version information ![]()
The final option at the bottom of the menus gives access to two different systems; My menu and Recent Settings. Recent settings displays the twenty most
recently used settings, while My menu allows you to make a customized set of options tailored for your needs.
