Nikon D40 SLR Review

Pressing the Playback button brings up the last image captured in full screen mode. This is also what you will see after shooting a picture if the Preview option is enabled.

When reviewing images you can press the "UP" portion of the 4-way controller to display page one of the extended information overlay.

Here you can see page two.

The Highlights overlay displays over-exposed areas by blinking them.

Here we have the exposure histogram display of the selected image.

Pressing the OK button while viewing an image will bring up the Retouch Menu.

Pressing the index button will display 4 small thumbnail images so you can quickly search through the captured images. Pressing the button again will display 9 thumbnail images per page mode.

Pressing the Zoom button enables the zoomed playback mode. The image is magnified further by continuing to press the button. You can stop at any one of the eight zoom views and scroll around to check for critical focus, color or composition by using the 4-way controller. Pressing the index button zooms out.

You can also rotate the main command dial to switch between stored images at the current zoom playback position. This is great for quickly checking critical focus on a sequence of images.

Retouch Menu

D-Lighting - brightens shadows, ideal for dark or back-lit photos
Red-Eye Correction - Remove red-eye in your flash portraits (saves as a corrected copy, does not overwrite original)
Trim - Crop and image and save as a new file
Monochrome - Choose Black&White, Sepia or Cyanotype (blue and white monochrome)
Filter Effects - Choose from Sky light, Warm filter, or Color balance
Small picture - Create a small copy of a selected image (640x480, 320x240, 160x120)
Image Overlay - Combine two existing RAW photos to create a single picture that is saved separately. The new image is saved at the current image quality and size settings.

Playback Menu

Delete - Selected or All images
Playback folder - Current or All folders
Rotate tall - Yes= rotate portrait images, No = do not rotate
Slide show - Start auto playback, set Frame Interval 2-10 secs.
Print set - Embed DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) information.

Just like in record mode, you can press the Help button at anytime while browsing the Playback menu system to view an explanation of each menu and option.
