Nikon D3100 Preview

Nikon's latest dSLR offering for 2010, the D3100 improves upon the D3000 released last year. While labeled an entry-level unit, the D3100 boasts some high-end specifications. These include a 14.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor, their EXPEED 2 image processor, 11-point AF system, advanced Face recognition that can detect up to 35 faces in the frame, broad ISO range (up to ISO 12,800 with expansion enabled), HDMI output, Live View, full 1080p HD video recording, and full-time AF in Live View and Movie modes. 

The most impressive consumer model to date from Nikon, the D3100 looks to be a promising opponent in a very competitive category. Check back in the coming weeks as we get our hands on an eval unit and start putting it though the paces.

The D3100 camera kit includes the AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR image stabilized lens, and is scheduled to be available at in mid September 2010 with an estimated retail price of $699.95 US.
