Nikon D1H SLR Review

Features & Controls
The D1H is compatible with about 90% of the F mount Nikkor lenses made. You need to use a focal length conversion factor of 1.5x to determine proper focal length coverage compared to the 35mm format.
On the left side of the lens mount is the Depth of Field (DOF) preview button, on
the right side is the lens release lock button and the 3-way switch is used to
select the desired focusing mode (Manual, Single AF or Continuous AF).
The best results will be obtained with the latest Nikkor type D or G optics with the
builtin CPU. One of my favorites is the Nikkor 24-85mm F2.8 when used on the D1H it
becomes a 36-128mm zoom.
On the side of the pentaprism you'll find the diopter adjustment for the eyelevel
finder and the metering control switch. Exclusive Nikon 3D Color Matrix (with
type G or D Nikkor lenses only, when used with other lenses it will be Matrix
metering only), Center-Weighted (8mm circular area in center of frame by default,
CSM options for 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm) or Spot (4mm
The accessory shoe has dedicated flash contacts for Nikon SB-28DX, SB-50DX, SB-28, SB-27, SB-26, SB-25, SB-24, SB-23, SB-22s, SB-29 Speedlights. The shoe is equipped with a safety pin to keep these flashes in place. True TTL flash can only be accomplished with either the SB-28DX or the SB-50DX Speedlights.
Also seen here is the eyelevel viewfinder, the lever on the back closes the dark slide
to block the viewfinder during long exposures. There are optional rubber eyecups that
can be attached to the viewfinder. You can change the focusing screen in the prism
head, Nikon has several types available. The viewfinder shows about 95% of the captured
For true TTL flash you need the Nikon SB-28DX or the new SB-50DX Speedlight. These flashes feature 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash (with D-type AF Nikkor lenses) and were designed specifically for the D1 series cameras.
The SB-28DX (and SB-50DX) also offers Auto Aperture flash capability and top flash sync speeds up to 1/500 second. Five flash modes: Front-Curtain Sync (normal sync), Red-Eye Reduction, Red-Eye Reduction with Slow Sync, Slow Sync and Rear-Curtain Sync

The D1H's viewfinder display - in the center you see the 5 different focus zones as
well as the center-weighted metering circle. The focus zone that is selected or
active will turn red when the shutter is pressed.
Across the bottom is the digital readout
that shows the autofocus status, metering mode, shutter speed, aperture setting,
exposure mode (P, A, S, M), flash status, EV comp, # of pictures taken and a digital
representation of an analog exposure scale when in Manual mode or setting EV comp.
On the back is a high quality 2-inch, color TFT LCD with 130,0000-pixel resolution. It allows for instant, in-field review of captured images with all the camera and exposure data plus optional histogram and/or highlighting. You can quickly go through stored images using the thumbnail option common to most digicams. All of the playback features are detailed on page 5
The D1H comes with a semi-transparent LCD cover but it has to be removed to really
"see" your images. Shown here is the $19.95 Nikon D1 Hoodcap from Hoodman USA. It's made of
optically transparent plastic and lets you see your images or the menu and gives your
(expensive to replace) LCD protection from scratches, nose oil, fingerprints and
And to complete the Hoodcap is the new $39.95 Nikon D1 Hoodcap Hood, a flexible, soft rubber bellows-type hood that fits around the color LCD and attaches to the Hoodcap (required).
The soft rubber hood collapses up against the camera when you need to look through
your viewfinder and then springs back into place. It provides glare-free
viewing when you want to use the color LCD, even in bright outdoor sunlight.
Hoodman now is offering the HD-1CM combo for D1, D1H and D1X owners that consists of
the Hoodcap, Hood and a 2X magnifying lens that mounts in the end of the Hood. Note
that in this version the Hood is permanently attached to the Hoodcap. Price is $69.95.
The mode dial has options for selftimer, continuous (5fps with a maximum of 40 frames) or single frame record modes or the playback mode. On top of that are the buttons for exposure bracketing, flash modes and ISO sensitivity. These options are selected by holding the button down and rotating the main command dial.
Below the mode dial is the Monitor button that lets you manually turn the color LCD
on or off. Next to that is the DELete button for deleting stored images during
playback. It also doubles as the card format button if pressed at the same time as
the Mode button on top.
The Mode button is held down and the main command dial is rotated to select between [P]rogrammed Automatic, [S]hutter priority, [A]perture priority or [M]anual record modes. Next to that is the "+/-" exposure compensation button that also works with the main command dial.
The shutter release has the
power on/off switch mounted around it. Moving the power switch beyond the
"On" position turns on the backlights for both the top and rear data LCD
displays so they can be seen in the dark.
The top data LCD displays all the important camera information; shutter speed, aperture, exposure mode, exposure compensation, exposure compensation value, aperture/shutter speed lock, flash sync mode, focus area, exposure bracketing information, electronic analogue display, battery power, CF Card confirmation, number of shots taken, number of shots remaining and frame number at playback.
