Features & Controls
The Coolpix S640 is equipped with a 5x Wide Nikkor optical zoom lens
with a 28-140mm (in 35mm equivalent) focal length coverage. The
maximum aperture is f/2.7 - 6.6. When powered down the lens retracts
into the body and is protected by a built-in shutter, no lens cap
needed. In the top-right corner above the lens you can see the camera's built-in speaker.
The S640's built-in flash features shooting modes for Auto, Forced On/Off, Red-Eye Reduction and Slow Synchro. At ISO the flash has a range of 0.5-8.0m (w) or 0.5-4.0m (telephoto)(1ft. 8in.-26ft. (w) 1ft. 8in.-13ft. (t)), when set to ISO auto. Under the flash is the camera's AF Illuminator, which assists the camera when focusing in low-light conditions.
Similar to most other Nikon ultra-compact cameras, the top of the camera is very simple. The only controls on top are the Power and Shutter Release buttons and the zoom control.
The contoured thumb groove on the back allows for easy operation and control of the camera with just one hand. Controls on the back: On top are the Mode selection and Playback buttons. In place of the 4-way controller is a rotary multi-selector. This dial works in the same way as the 4-way controller, allowing you to press any of the 4 directions to access timer, flash, EV compensation and macro modes, but it also allows you to scroll through images and menus by turning the dial. Under the dial are the buttons for the Menu and Delete functions.
On the right side is the PC/AV port, which handles both the USB 2.0
(High-speed) connection for downloading images and movies to your PC,
and the Audio/Video output for TV display.
Equipped with approx. 45MB of internal memory, the S640 also has a memory card slot that accepts SD/SDHC memory cards of up to 16GB (specific cards are listed on Nikon's user's manual).
Approx. Storage Capacities:
Powering the S640 is a 3.7V, 1050mAh rechargeable Li-Ion battery. Nikon claims that the battery is capable of capturing 270 images on a single charge, according to CIPA standards.
