Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The Coolpix A kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the display screen.
You have quite a few options for deciding what data is displayed about each image in Playback mode, and you can pick which options to display. Press the Menu button and select the Playback Menu tab. Select Playback Display Options and you then can pick which types of display information to include in the scroll.
Press the up and down areas on the four-way button to switch between views. The first screen has no data, showing only the image. The second screen includes basic information, including the file name along the bottom, the date and time the image was shot, and the resolution. The third screen shows any blown out highlights in the photo as blinking areas, and the word Highlights appears along the bottom of the screen.
The fourth screen shows four histograms -- overall, red, green, and blue -- along the right side and a shrunken image on the left side. The fifth screen is a set of three screens that provide detailed information about the settings for the image, such as shutter speed and exposure valuation. If you add a text comment to the image, it will be shown in this set of screens too. The sixth screen is a combination screen, showing a histogram and detailed shooting information.
You can use the Nikon Coolpix A's Index mode to scroll through images in Playback mode more quickly. With a single image shown on the screen, press the minus magnifying lens icon button on the left side of the back of the camera to see a 2x2 grid. Continue pressing the button to see a 3x3 and a 9x8 grid. Press the button again to see a calendar view, where the photos you've shot are sorted by the date they were shot. Press the plus magnifying lens icon button to reduce the number of photos shown in the grid.
Nikon included a Zoom function with this camera's Playback mode as well. With a single image shown on the screen, press the plus magnifying lens icon button to magnify the image on the camera's LCD screen. The overall image is shown in a thumbnail in the lower right corner with the current view in a yellow outlined area. Use the four-way button to shift the view of the magnified image. Use the minus magnifying lens icon button to reduce the magnification.
To play back a movie on the Coolpix A's LCD screen, press the OK button. The down four-way button will pause the playback.
With the movie shown on the screen, use the up and down four-way buttons to see shooting information about the movie, just as you would with a single image on the screen.
