Nikon is a Japanese company known the world over for its cameras and lenses, and for decades has garnered the esteem of enthusiasts and professionals alike. Nikon began in 1917 as a merger of Japan's three leading optical manufacturers at the time. After World War II, Nikon began to receive worldwide attention for its Nikkor lenses, and Nikon camera lenses continue to be highly regarded for their sharp, precise optics.
In 1996, Nikon entered the digital camera market with the 0.3-megapixel Coolpix 100, which could hold 19 photos and featured a built-in PCMIA card for easy transfer to laptops. Though the technology has greatly advanced since that time, Nikon has retained the Coolpix name for their point-and-shoot digital cameras. The Nikon Coolpix product line is divided into three sub-groups denoted by a letter in the model number: Performance (P), Style (S), and Life (L).
The Performance Series cameras are aimed at seasoned users and boast high megapixels and powerful zoom lenses, while the Life Series represents the entry-level models. The Nikon cameras in the Style Series target savvy consumers looking for sleek designs, cutting-edge features, and high quality images. At the top of Nikon's digital camera lineup are the D Series digital SLRs, which have consistently ranked among the top-selling cameras in their class.
