Kodak M1093 IS Review
By Mike Flacy
Features & Controls
The Easyshare M1093 IS is equipped with a Kodak AF 3x all-glass lens with a 35-105 mm (35 mm equiv.) f/3.1-f/5.7, focal length coverage. The lens retracts into the camera when powered down and is protected by a built in lens protector.
Auto focus is handled by a 5-zone contrast detect TTL system with multi-zone and center zone options and single AF or continuous AF modes.
The focus range is:
Normal: - 2.0 ft (0.6 m)-infinity (Wide/Tele)
Macro: - 2.8 in.-2.3 ft (0.07-0.7 m) Wide, 1.3-2.3 ft (0.4-0.7 m) Tele
Landscape: - 32.8 ft (10 m)-infinity
The built-in speedlight has mode for Auto, Fill, Red eye pre-flash, Red eye and off. The maximum range is approx. 2.0-9.8 ft (0.6-3.0 m) at wide or 2.0-6.6 ft (0.6-2.0 m) at tele, using ISO 400.
The indoor/outdoor 3.0-inch wide view color LCD has 230,000 pixels of resolution. It is used as the live viewfinder, for viewing stored images/movies, and accessing the menu screens.
On the back is the Zoom lens controls, in playback they function as the magnify and index controls for inspecting stored images. Next you can see the built-in speaker right above the play button, which switches the camera into Review or Playback mode. The Menu button is for calling up and dismissing the onscreen menu system. The 4-way 'joystick' selector is for navigating menus and selecting pictures; pushing it inward will accept menu selections. Pressing the 4-way controller 'Up' toggles the amount of overlay info shown on the LCD and 'Down' toggles the Drive mode. Lastly is the Delete and Share buttons along the bottom.
On top are is the Power, Flash, and Mode buttons along with the Shutter release. The Mode button allows you to choose from Smart, Program, one of the 22 Scenes, or Movie mode.
On the right side of the camera is a DC IN jack for an optional AC power supply as well as the USB/Power combination port. This port not only handles transferring images to your PC, Mac, or PictBridge compatible printer, but it also receives incoming power to charge the Li-ion battery pack. On the bottom (not shown) is an interface connector that allows you to use one of several optional Kodak EasyShare Camera or Printer Docks. The camera only outputs Audio-Video when used with these exclusive Kodak Camera Docks.
The M1093 IS has ~32MB of internal memory and a memory card slot capable of using SD/SDHC memory cards. Images, movies and sound recordings can be copied from internal memory to SD card or vice-versa. We recommend the purchase of at least a 1GB SD card (or larger if planning on a vacation).
The M1093 IS is powered by a 3.7v 1000mAh Kodak Li-Ion rechargeable digital camera battery (KLIC-7004), that is charged in-camera when using the USB cable. You can use the included AC adapter or simply plug the camera into a USB port on your PC; charging using a PC's USB port will take much longer than using the included AC adapter. Kodak claims you can capture 220 pictures per charge, using CIPA Standard testing methods.
