Rotate the Mode Dial to select a recording mode: Auto, SCeNe, Program AE, Aperture priority, Shutter speed priority, Manual, Custom or Video (movie capture.)  If the Mode Description option is enabled a brief description of each mode is displayed when first selected.

Program AE mode is an automatic exposure mode, the camera selects the best aperture and shutter speed for you. You have a multitude of other adjustments available, see the Record Menu below.

When you half-press the shutter to achieve the focus and exposure lock, the AF targets will turn green and show the area it is focusing on. The aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, flash power, and ISO settings will be displayed across the bottom. If the focus does not lock there will be a red "AF" in the upper right hand corner.

SCeNe mode lets you can choose from 16 pre-programmed scene modes (Portrait, sports, Landscape, Closeup, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Snow, Beach, Text, Fireworks, Museum, Flower, Self Portrait, Party, Children or Backlight) to achieve the proper exposure for various shooting conditions.

Aperture-priority mode allows you to select the aperture setting (f/2.8, 3.4, 4, 4.8, 5.6 @ wide and f/4.8, 5.6, 6.7, 8.0, 9.5 @ tele) and the camera sets the shutter speed accordingly. You change aperture values by pressing the Jog Dial in, then rotating it.

Shutter speed priority mode allows you to select a desired shutter speed (64 to 1/2000 seconds) and the camera sets the aperture accordingly. You change the shutter speed value using the Jog Dial.

Custom mode lets you select and memorize a customized set of exposure options and camera parameters for quick recall later.

Picture Size - 4.0MP, 3.5MP(3:2), 3.1MP, 2.1MP, 1.1MP
Compression - JPEG quality: Standard or Fine
White Balance - Auto, Daylight, Tungsten or Fluorescent
Exposure Bracketing Interval - ±0.3EV, ±0.7EV, ±1.0EV
Exposure Metering - Multi-Pattern, Center-weighted, Center Spot
Focus Zone - Multi-zone, Center-zone, Selectable-zone (center, left, or right)
AF Control - Continuous AF, Single AF, Accessory Lens AF
Color Mode - High Color, Natural Color, Low Color, B&W or Sepia

Video mode lets record 640 x 480 motion video at 13fps or 320 x 240 motion video at 15fps with audio. The length of each movie is dependant on available memory space. You can optionally select a maximum clip length of 5, 15 or 30 seconds. The optical zoom can be preset before recording but not during.
