The Program Auto screen showing some optional settings enabled; Flash is forced On,
Macro focus mode,
fluorescent2 white balance, ISO fixed at 100, exposure compensation +0.3EV, center
weighted metering and spot focus. The image size is 2816x2112 and Fine quality has
been selected, we can shoot 149 more frames at this size/quality, the battery is
showing a full charge and we are using an optional SD memory card.
When you half-press the shutter release the camera sets the exposure and locks the
focus, if successful the AF target marks turn green.
The Best Shot mode features different pre-programmed exposure scenes to make photographic tasks easier.
You select the scene that best fits your needs and the camera makes all the necessary
settings for you.
There are 25 different Best Shot scenes:
Portrait, Scenery, Portrait w/Scenery, Coupling Shot, Pre-Shot, Soft Focus, Children,
Sports, Candlelight Portrait, Party, Pet, Flower, Natural Green, Soft Flowing Water,
Splashing Water, Sundown, Night Scene,
Night Scene Portrait, Fireworks, Food, Text, Collection, Monochrome, Retro (Sepia),
Twilight and Register Favorites (custom build your own Best Shot scene)
The Aperture-priority mode allows you to select the desired aperture and the camera
automatically matches the proper shutter speed. Available aperture settings are: F2.8,
3.2, 3.4, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.6, 6.3, 7.1, 8.0 - at wide angle (F4 - F11.1 tele), aperture
values vary at different optical zoom focal lengths.
Pressing the SET button while in Aperture priority mode will bring this assistance screen
up on the LCD, it explains the effects of the different aperture values. Small aperture
numbers yield shallow depth of field (range of focus), large aperture numbers yield much
larger depth of field.
The Shutter-speed priority mode allows you to select the desired shutter speed and the
camera automatically matches the proper aperture. Shutter speeds range from
60 seconds to 1/2000 second plus Bulb in Shutter-speed priority and Manual mode.
1/8 to 1/2000 second in Aperture priority, Program Auto and Best Shot.
Pressing the SET button while in Shutter-speed priority mode will bring this assistance
screen up on the LCD, it explains the effects of the different shutter speeds.
Slower shutter speeds allow subjects in motion to blur, faster shutter speed will
effectively "freeze" any motion.
Pressing the BKT (Bracketing) button brings up this onscreen menu to quickly
select from:
- Single frame (default)
- High Speed Continuous (3fps up to 6 frames)
- Normal Speed Continuous (record one frame after another at approx. 1fps)
- Multi Continuous (records 25 frames and saves them as a single 1600x1200 image)
- Auto Exposure Bracketing (captures 3 frames and varies the exposure value)
- White Balance Bracketing (captures 3 frames and varies the white balance)
- Auto Focus Bracketing (captures 3 frames and varies the focus distance)
- Multi Bracketing (one of six non-configurable auto bracketing variables:
- Filter 1 records 5 images and uses monochrome, sepia, red and purple filters
- Filter 2 records 5 images and uses green, blue, yellow and pink filters.
- Portrait records 3 images and varies the flesh tone saturation.
- Sharpness records 3 images and varies the sharpness.
- Saturation records 3 images and varies the color saturation.
- Contrast records 3 images and varies the image contrast.
Pressing the "EX" button brings up this shortcut menu to quickly change the
White balance, ISO, Metering mode or AF Area mode.
Just when you thought you'd seen it all -- meet the new Ex Finder display!
Press the DISPLAY button to cycle from normal overlay, Ex Finder, no overlay, LCD off.
The Ex Finder superimposes a wealth of camera settings on the screen in a real-time
graphical user interface. Flash mode, Focus mode, White Balance, Focal Distance
(depth of field), Histogram, ISO speed, Color adjustments, Aperture, Shutter speed
and Exposure Compensation value.
Shades of James Bond !! You can always tell the people at the bar that you're a
spy tracking a bad guy with your pocket radar. "Bartender, one vodka martini please -
shaken, not stirred."
When using the Manual Focus option the portion of the frame covered by the AF Area
is enlarged to help aid in critical focusing. I didn't catch it here but there is
also a sliding distance scale displayed while actively adjusting the focus.
