Record Screens & Menus

Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The PowerShot SX500 IS kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the LCD.

The type of information that's displayed on the screen as you're preparing to shoot photos with the PowerShot SX500 IS will change depending on which mode you're using.

In Auto mode, you'll see several icons across the top of the display, including the battery life, resolution, number of photos that can be stored in the memory card's free space, movie resolution, amount of memory card space available for movie recording, and the shooting mode. The flash mode is under the shooting mode.

The display information changes again when you pre-focus on the scene by pressing the SX500's shutter button halfway. First you'll see a green rectangle appear in the middle of the scene, which tells you the camera has achieved focus. Along the bottom of the screen, you'll see the current scene's ISO setting, shutter speed, and aperture appear, but the icons along the top of the screen will disappear.

By twisting the PowerShot SX500's mode dial, you can access Live View Control mode, which allows you to try to make simple changes to the scene's lighting and colors before you record the photo. In Live View Control mode, press the Func/Set button to open the menu shown here.

Use the four-way button to move the slider bars to create the desired effects. As you change the slider bars, the scene's look will change to reflect your choices.

In Manual shooting mode, you'll have the most control over the photograph. Turn the mode dial to "M" to enter Manual mode. Then press the Func/Set button to open a menu along the left side of the display screen, where you can control ISO, white balance, colors, continuous-shot mode, flash exposure, metering mode, aspect ratio, resolution, quality, and movie resolution.

From the main Manual shooting screen, you also can control the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO setting. Press the exposure value button to change the aperture and shutter speed, while pressing the upward four-way button allows you to change the ISO.

In Program mode, you'll see the same icons across the top of the screen, along with the ISO setting and the exposure valuation across the bottom of the screen.

You can set up the SX500's interesting manual focus feature through these menu screens, too. Press the left side of the four-way button to display the various types of focus options available in your current shooting mode. Macro focus is indicated by the flower icon, autofocus is indicated by the triangle and A icon, and manual focus is indicated by MF.

Once you select MF, you'll see a bar on the right side of the screen that helps you determine the precise focus distance for the object in the scene. Spin the control dial to adjust the bar.

While in manual focus mode, the SX500's LCD screen will magnify the center of the screen, allowing you to create a sharper focus by turning the control dial.

Turning the mode dial to the interlocking rings icon will allow you to open the special effects shooting menu. From this mode, press the Func/Set button to open the special effects menu, which includes: Fish-eye effect, miniature effect, toy camera effect, monochrome, super vivid, and poster effect,

There's also a Discreet mode on the mode dial that turns off the flash and all of the camera's sounds. The camera will use automatic settings in Discreet mode.

When you're ready to use the SX500 IS to shoot a movie, you can set the resolution from any of the mode dial's shooting modes. Just press the Func/Set button, which will open a menu of icons along the left side of the screen. Scroll down until you see the movie resolution icon, which is a number superimposed over the edge of a rectangle. Unfortunately, Canon only included 720p HD and SD movie resolutions with this model; there's no 1080p HD option.

To start recording the movie, press the dedicated movie button on the back of this PowerShot camera, located in the upper right corner of the back panel. You'll see a red Rec icon near the upper portion of the LCD screen while the video is recording, as well as a clock counting the amount of time the recording has been talking place at the top of the screen.

To open the recording menu for the SX500 IS, just press the Menu button in the lower right corner of the back of the camera. The entries in the menus will be a little different depending on what you've selected on the mode dial. The menu options listed here are available in Program mode.
