Pressing the blue Playback button on the back of the SX230 HS will set the camera into Playback or Review mode, where you can view your stored images or videos. The camera will display the last image/video captured. Pressing the DISP. button will scroll through the different display options available while viewing the image, which include: standard format with minimal info, a smaller thumbnail with histogram and extended exposure information, a close-up of the focal point used, or with no information and all icons cleared.

Another way quickly search through stored files is using the Index playback function shown above. Using the Wide angle zoom control will access this option and the more times the lever is pressed, the amount of thumbnails will change, from 6, 12, 48, to over 100 at a time. To scroll through these index screens, simply use the 4-way pad, and once you land on the image you want to see full-screen, press the FUNC/SET button.

Zooming in on an image is also accessed by using the zoom control lever, to the Telephoto end. Images can be magnified up to 10x, in small increment, and you get a small indicator box at the bottom right to help you see what portion of the frame is being magnified. Using the 4-way pad here will allow you to scroll around inside the image to a selected area to be enlarged.

Movie clips can be played back in the camera, with audio, thanks to the built-in speaker. When a movie clip is on the screen you press the FUNC/SET button, which when brings up a large "play" symbol. Pressing again will start the video. Pressing the FUNC/SET button while the clip is playing will pause the video and bring up VCR-like controls to easily access any function you may want to use. The scissor icon will access the edit menu allowing you to cut clips and save videos.
