Here is the screen display when using the G12's smart Auto exposure mode. Designed for anyone to use, this intelligent exposure mode allows anyone to use the G12 as a simple point-n-shoot camera. Here the camera camera will automatically select the proper exposure values  (shutter speed and aperture), which allows the user to focus on the subject at hand. At the same time it will also choose the best possible scene mode settings for the shot being framed, which is accomplished by the camera analyzing the subject(s) being framed, then choosing from various different pre-set scene mode settings to get the best possible photo.


When shutter release is half-pressed, you will see which of the nine AF points (rectangle) have been chosen for AF (depending on AF mode used), which will turn Green if focus was successful or Red if it fails. Depending on which exposure mode you are using, you can press the AF Point selection button on the back to move the active AF point around, or to enable Face Select. Other icons indicate the shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, and the ISO values selected. 



Program mode is mostly automatic, where the camera chooses the exposure settings for you. However, you now have access to a multitude of camera settings like ISO speed, white balance, program-shift, metering, my colors, etc.

Tv mode (aka Shutter Speed Priority) enables the user to select the shutter speed (from 1/4000 to 15 seconds) and the camera automatically selects the proper aperture value. Faster shutter speeds will 'freeze' fast-moving subjects, while slower speeds will let you pan with a fast-moving object and blur the background, or show the flow of moving water.

Av mode (Aperture Priority) is the exact opposite of Tv, now you select the aperture value (from F2.8 to F8.0) and the camera will automatically select the proper shutter speed. Selecting the aperture allows you to control depth of field (focus range), smaller numbers yield less depth of field, larger numbers yield more.

• Bracketing - Off, AE bracketing, Focus bracketing
• Drive Mode - Single, Continuous, Continuous Shooting AF
• Flash intensity - Adjusts flash power ±2 EV in 1/3 EV steps
• ND Filter - On or Off
• Image Aspect - 16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, 4:5, 
• Image Format - JPEG, RAW, RAW+JPEG
• Image Size/Quality - Large 3648x2736, Medium1 2816x2112, Medium2 1600x1200, Small 640x480; Fine or Normal JPEG compression
  

In Manual mode you have complete control over the camera, and use the front and rear control dials to toggle both the aperture and shutter speed. To help you dial in the exposure, these is an exposure scale that is displayed on the right. When changing either the shutter speed or aperture, another small scale is shown directly above the values. All Menu options and camera settings are the same as Program, Tv, Av, etc.


The G12 also offers two Custom positions on the mode dial (C1 & C2), which allow you to put together a custom set of settings for your own unique style.

Here we can see the unique Nostalgic mode, which was first Introduced on the PowerShot S90. This Scene mode allows you to create an aged look to your photos with 5 degrees of intensity, which is toggled by the front control wheel. 

Another newer Canon scene mode offering is HDR. One of the most popular photography methods over the past few years, this option will capture 3 photos in a row with different exposure values, then combine all three in-camera to create a single photograph with increased dynamic range (more detail in both shadows and highlights). Use of a tripod is recommended.


One of the most notable upgrades on the G12 over the G11 is the addition of HD video capture. This means you can now record video clips with audio at 1280x720, 640x480 or 320x240. The frame rate is fixed at 30fps. The optical zoom may not be used while recording, so you will want to preset the zoom to the desired focal length before recording starts. The length of a movie is limited by the amount of available memory, up to a maximum clip size of 4GB or 60 minutes. These clips are captured in QuickTime format and saved as .MOV files.

The G12 IS offers 21 pre-programmed Scene modes: Low Light, Quick Shot, Portrait, Landscape, Kids & Pets, Sports, Smart Shutter, Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Color Accent, Color Swap, High Dynamic Range, Nostalgic, Fisheye Effect, Miniature Effect, Beach, Underwater (with optional housing), Foliage, Snow, Fireworks, and Stitch Assist . These modes are set up to give you the best possible pictures for specific shooting situations.

The My Menu sub-menu allows you to create your own customized Shooting or 'Record' menu with the settings you choose.
