Canon EOS M50 Preview

HR_EOS_M50_BLACK_BODY_FRONT_CL[1].jpgThe Canon EOS M50 may be the newest entry level camera in the M lineup for Canon, but it's already the most advanced. With features like 24.1MP APS-C CMOS image sensor, this little camera can record 4K (1.6x cropped) video, Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus with a whopping 96 focus points, and 720p HD video up to 120fps. All for a body only price of $779.

Canon is just starting to get serious with its mirrorless digital cameras. Although they've yet to make one that can compete at the higher end of the camera spectrum like the Sony A7 III or the Fuji X-H1, the M50 is proof they're changing with the times.
HR_EOS_M50_BLACK_EFM15-45_STM_BACKOPEN_CL[1].jpgThis is the first Canon camera that can shoot 4K that costs less than $3,200. That's a big deal. However, that advancement in technology comes at a price. The 24.1MP APS-C sensor already has a crop of 1.6. For those of you not in the know, any sensor that's smaller than a full frame sensor has some sort of crop. The short version is this, take whatever the crop factor is of your sensor and multiply that by the mm of your lens and that's the real focal length you're going to get. So if you have a 35mm lens on the M50, it's going to essentially give the lens a 56mm look. Now throw in a 4K crop of 1.6 and you're now looking at a crop of 2.56 when you're shooting 4K with the M50, which makes that same 35mm lens a roughly 90mm equivalent (or more if engage the digital image stabilization. Also, and this is a big letdown, Canon'sepic Dual Pixel CMOS AutoFocus doesn't work in 4K movie recording, which mean you're relying on contrast-detection AF and it's, honestly, pretty bad. That said, as a 1080p vlogging camera -- it shoots 24p, 30p, and 60p -- you do get Dual Pixel AF and a 3.0" Vari-angle touchscreen display to help composing your frame when you're a one-person crew. If you need ultra-slow motion, the M50 offers 120fps in 720p, which is a little behind the times, to be honest. It also has an expandable ISO range of up to 51,200, which, who knows how useable the images are when you get up that high, but it's nice to have if there's no light.

The M50 also features an OLED viewfinder like a real camera so you don't have to always use the screen on the back, which is super helpful when shooting in direct sunlight and helps save on battery life.

Like we said, this could be the perfect little camera for traveling and vlogging. In addition to the Vari-angle touchscreen, there's an HDMI output and a 3.5mm microphone jack to help you up your sound game.

Like most new cameras, connectivity is key and the M50 has Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth. You can connect with their app and use your phone as a remote shutter or have your images automatically transfer to a compatible device while you're shooting. This makes Instagramming and Snap chatting images you just took a breeze.

The M50 has enough little features that set it apart from Canon's more expensive M models that make it the more appealing choice to those upgrading from a smartphone.

Here's a video showing off the camera's capabilities:
