Record Screens & Menus

Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The Rebel T5i kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the display screen.

Record - auto mode GIF.gif
The LCD screen on the Canon EOS Rebel T5i will change its look depending on whether you're shooting in Live View or Viewfinder mode. You can change between the two modes by pressing the button marked with the camera icon to the right of the viewfinder on the back of the T5i.

You can twist the mode dial to Intelligent Auto to have a fully automatic shooting experience. In this shooting mode while using Live View you'll see a limited amount of information on the screen. In the upper left corner is the Intelligent Auto icon, the number of photos remaining on the memory card, the battery icon, the autofocus mode, burst mode, and resolution icons. In the upper right corner you'll find the Quick Control button and the creative filters icon. You also may see the exposure simulation and ISO setting in the bottom right corner. You can enable or disable the T5i's touchscreen by touching the icon in the lower left corner.

If you press the Info button on the back of the camera (upper left corner), you can add a histogram in the upper right corner of the screen. Press it again to remove all icons from the screen. If you press Info again, the shooting mode icon, photos remaining, battery charge icon, Quick Control button, and touchscreen button will return to the T5i's LCD.

Record - program GIF.gif
Remaining in Live View mode, you can turn the mode dial to P for Program mode. You'll see a similar set of icons on the screen, with the exposure valuation bar added to the bottom of the screen. As with Auto mode, press the Info button a few times to change the look of the screen.

Record - Q menu live GIF.gif
You can access the Rebel T5i's Quick Control menu by pressing the Q button on the back of the camera. In Live View mode you'll see buttons appear on both sides of the screen, giving you access to some of the T5i's more commonly used shooting settings. The buttons that you'll see on the edges of the screen may change, depending on which shooting mode you're using.

As you highlight or touch a button, the options available under each button will appear along the bottom of the screen. Touch one of those buttons or highlight one and press the Set button on the back of the camera to activate it.  In Program or Manual mode the Quick Control buttons in Live View are (beginning at top left):

  • Autofocus (Live View Mode) - Face Detection with Tracking, FlexiZone Multi AF, FlexiZone Single AF, AF Quick Mode

Record - Q menu view GIF.gif
When you switch to Viewfinder mode, the Quick Control menu will change its look, too. To open Quick Control when shooting in Viewfinder mode, just press the Q button on the back of the camera. The Quick Control menu may automatically appear on the screen each time you power on the camera.

The look of the Quick Control menu will change based on the shooting mode you've chosen with the mode dial. All of the buttons will not be visible initially. Press the Q button again to make all of the buttons visible and active, as shown above.

To pick a button from the Rebel T5i's Quick Control screen you can either touch it or highlight it with the four-way button. An explanation of the button's capabilities will appear across the bottom of the LCD. To actually select this feature, press the Set button on the back of the camera or touch the button again.

You'll then open a new screen as shown above, such as the Image Quality, White Balance, or Built-in Flash Settings screens. With those new screens open, you can touch one of the buttons to pick a setting or highlight the button you want to select and press Set.

You'll see a few different buttons here in Viewfinder mode than what you saw in Live View mode discussed earlier. The curved arrow button on the screen is a Back button that will return you to the previous screen.

The Viewfinder Quick Controls screen buttons shown here are available in Manual mode (as indicated by the M in the upper left corner). The buttons, starting from the top left are:

  • Shutter Speed - Bulb, 30 seconds to 1/4000th of a second

You also can make some changes to the features from the Quick Control screen by using the command dial.

Record - mode dial GIF.gif
Turning the mode dial while you're in Viewfinder mode will cause an explanation of each mode setting to appear on the screen as shown above. While working in the Rebel T5i's Live View mode, you will not see explanations of each mode dial option.

Record - shooting menu.jpg
Press the Menu button on the back of the Rebel T5i to open the camera's menu screens. The shooting menus for the camera are designated by camera icons on tabs across the top of the screen. There are four tabs related to the shooting menu commands, meaning there are four different screens containing shooting menu commands. The fourth tab contains an icon that looks a little bit different because it's related to Live View commands.

You can make selections on the menu screens either by touching the tabs and commands or by using the four-way button to highlight the commands and tabs and then pressing the Set button on the back of the camera. Because the tabs and command lines are a little small, it can be tough to touch them accurately, so you may find yourself using the four-way button and the Set button to make your selections from these menu screens. The shooting menu options are:

You'll also see the Setup Menu options represented as tabs with wrench icons across the top of the screen. As with the shooting menu tabs, there are four tabs and four different screens for the Setup Menu, which handle the control of the camera's operational settings. • Delete All Items
  • Display From My Menu - Enable, Disable

Record - movie GIF.gif
To record a movie with the EOS Rebel T5i, you just slide the power switch all the way upward, past the On label and up to the movie camera icon label. Once you're in movie mode, you can press the Live View button -- which doubles as the Movie Recording button -- to start and stop movie recordings. To shoot a movie with the T5i, you must use Live View mode, as the viewfinder will not work for framing movies. This means you also have to put up with the slightly slow autofocus that occurs in Live View mode.

The movie screen contains a number of icons to help you understand the current settings, depending on the video recording mode that you've selected with the mode dial. Across the top of the screen, you'll see the time remaining in the current recording (a default of 29:59), the battery icon, and the Quick Control button. The movie autofocus setting is in the lower left corner, and the EV bar is along the bottom.

As with still images, you can press the Info button while in movie mode to change the look of the icons on the screen.

If you press the Q button on the back of the camera while in movie mode, you can gain access to a variety of video recording settings. You can activate the buttons that appear along the left and right side of the screen by touching them or by using the four-way button. When the additional icons appear across the bottom of the screen, you can select one to activate it.

The Quick Control menu options in movie mode are:

  • Autofocus - Face Detection with Tracking, FlexiZone Multi AF, FlexiZone Single AF
  • Drive / Self-Timer - Single, Continuous, Self-timer 10 Sec., Self-timer 2 Sec, Self-timer Continuous
  • Image Quality - 18M High-Quality JPEG, 18M Standard Quality JPEG, 8M High-Quality JPEG, 8M Standard Quality JPEG, 4.5M High-Quality JPEG, 4.5M Standard Quality JPEG, 2.5M JPEG, 0.3M JPEG, RAW + JPEG 18M High-Quality, RAW 18M High-Quality
  • Movie Rec. Size - 1920x1080 30fps, 1920x1080 24fps, 1280x720 60fps, 640x480 30fps
  • Video Snapshot - Off, 4 Sec.
  • Back
  • White Balance - Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, White Fluorescent, Flash, Custom
  • Picture Style - Auto, Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome, User Defined 1, User Defined 2, User Defined 3
  • Auto Correct - Disable, Low, Standard, High

Record - sensor cleaning.jpg
Each time you power down the Rebel T5i, you're going to see this screen, which indicates an automatic image sensor cleaning is occurring. It requires just a couple of seconds. You can turn this automatic feature off through the on-screen menus; though we don't recommend it.
