Record Screens & Menus

Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The Rebel SL1 kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the display screen.

Record - auto mode GIF.gif
When shooting in Intelligent Auto in Live View mode with the Canon EOS SL1, you'll see quite a bit of information on the screen. In the upper left corner, you'll see the shooting mode icon, the number of photos remaining on the memory card, and the battery icon. Below the shooting mode icon is the autofocus, burst mode, resolution, and flash mode icons. In the lower left corner is the touchscreen control button, through which you can enable or disable the touchscreen.

On the right side is the Quick Control button, with the white balance, picture style, auto lighting optimizer, and creative filters icons below it. You also may see the exposure simulation and ISO setting in the bottom right corner.

Press the Info button on the back of the camera to change the type of icons on the Intelligent Auto shooting screen. The first time you press the Info button, you'll see a histogram in the upper right corner. Press Info again to remove all icons from the screen, leaving only the autofocus brackets.

Press Info a third time to add a few icons to the screen, including the shooting mode, photos remaining, battery power, Quick Control button, ISO setting, and touchscreen button.

Record - Program mode GIF.gif
In Program mode in Live View, you'll see many of the same icons on the screen as you'd see in Intelligent Auto mode, along with the exposure valuation bar across the bottom of the screen. Again, you can press the Info button to change what's displayed on the screen.

Record - viewfinder mode.jpg
The Quick Control menu is a great feature for easily making changes to the SL1's various settings, and it can be accessed either in Live View or Viewfinder mode. The gray screen shown here is available in Viewfinder mode. The buttons displayed on the LCD in Quick Control will depend on which shooting mode you're using, as the buttons shown here are used with Program mode.

Record - Q menu GIF.gif
The Viewfinder Quick Controls screen buttons shown here are available in Manual mode. The buttons, starting from the top left are:

  • Shooting Mode
  • Shutter Speed - Bulb, 30 seconds to 1/4000th of a second
  • Aperture - F4 to F29
  • ISO - Auto, 100 to 12800

The back button is in the lower left corner, and an explanation of each mode is listed across the bottom of the screen as you touch each button. (If you don't see all of the buttons you expect to see in the Quick Control screen, press the Q/Set button.)

To open the screens associated with each button, press the Q/Set button to highlight an on-screen button. Then use the four-way button to scroll through the options and press Q/Set to open a detailed screen associated with the highlighted button. Once you have a detailed screen open, you then can scroll through the options using the four-way button, such as with the Image Quality and Drive / Self-Timer screens shown here.

Because of the SL1's touchscreen LCD, you can open the detailed screens by touching the Quick Control button on the screen. First press the Q/Set button to activate the touchscreen option. Touch the desired button to see an explanation of the feature appear on the screen. Touch it again to open the detailed screen, and then touch the command button you want to activate.

You also can make some changes to the features from the Quick Control screen by using the command dial.

Record - popup menu GIF.gif
When you're shooting in Live View mode and press the Q/Set button, the Quick Control screen changes its look with the feature buttons on the sides of the shooting screen. Again, the available buttons will change depending on which shooting mode you're using. You'll see a few different buttons here in Live View mode than are available in Viewfinder mode. In Program or Manual mode the available buttons are (beginning at top left):

  • Autofocus (Live View Mode) - Face Detection with Tracking, FlexiZone Multi AF, FlexiZone Single AF, AF Quick Mode
  • Drive / Self-Timer - Single, Continuous, Self-timer 10 Sec., Self-timer 2 Sec, Self-timer Continuous

  • Back
  • White Balance - Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, White Fluorescent, Flash, Custom

  • Auto Correct - Disable, Low, Standard, High
  • Creative Filters - Off, Grainy B/W, Soft Focus, Fish-Eye Effect, Art Bold, Water Painting, Toy Camera, Miniature
To activate a button, press the Q/Set button. Then either touch the button on the screen or use the four-way button to highlight a button. Once you've highlighted or touched a button, the options available under that feature will appear as additional buttons across the bottom of the screen. Touch one to activate it or use the four-way button and Q/Set button to activate it.

In either Quick Control window, use the curved arrow button on the screen as a Back button to return to the previous screen.

Record - mode dial GIF.gif
If you're shooting in Viewfinder mode, as you turn the mode dial on the EOS Rebel SL1, you'll see an explanation of each mode appear on the screen. The description stays on the screen for a couple of seconds. There is no description on the screen when turning the mode dial while in Live View mode.

Record - scene mode GIF.gif
Turn the mode dial to SCN, and you'll gain access to the Scene Mode menu. This is a very limited set of options, as most point-n-shoot cameras offer many more Scene Mode options. Then again, many DSLR cameras don't offer a Scene Mode setting at all.

The screen shown here is available in Live View mode. Turn the mode dial to SCN and press the Q/Set button followed by the Info button to open this screen, where the Scene mode options are: Kids, Food, Night Portrait, Handheld Night Scene, and HDR Backlight Control. Press the Q/Set button to pick a highlighted scene.

In Viewfinder mode, the Scene Mode options change a bit. With the mode dial set to SCN, you'll need to press the Q/Set button a couple of times to open the Scene mode screen. Oddly, Canon added a sixth Scene Mode option -- Candlelight -- when shooting in Viewfinder mode only.

Record - image menu.jpg
To open the Canon SL1's on-screen shooting menu, press the Menu button on the back of the camera in the upper left corner. There are four screens for the shooting menu, indicated by the camera icons on the tabs at the upper left of the top of the screen. (The fourth camera icon looks a little different because it indicates Live View menu commands.) You can scroll through the screens by using the left and right buttons on the four-way button to move between the tabs. Use the up and down buttons to scroll through the menus options listed on the screen. Press the Q/Set button to open a menu option.

Or you can select tabs and menu options by touching the screen, although they're a little small and you may find it difficult to select the exact item you want. The options in the Shooting Menu are:

The options here include:

  • Register to My Menu

Record - movie GIF 2.gif
Movie recording with the Canon Rebel SL1 is a pretty easy process. You flip the power switch all the way upward to the Movie Camera icon. Then press the button with the camera icon on it near the viewfinder on the back of the camera to start and stop movie recording. The SL1 offers full HD video recording. You only can shoot movies in Live View mode; the viewfinder is not available.

The movie screen contains a number of icons to help you understand the current settings. Across the top of the screen, you'll see the time remaining in the current recording (a default of 29:59), the battery icon, and the Quick Control button. The movie autofocus setting is in the lower left corner, and the EV is along the bottom.

Press the Info button to see more icons along the right and left sides of the screen. Press the Q/Set button to make changes to the settings, just as you did with the Quick Control menu in the shooting modes discussed earlier. The Quick Control menu options in movie mode are:

  • Autofocus - Face Detection with Tracking, FlexiZone Multi AF, FlexiZone Single AF
  • Drive / Self-Timer - Single, Continuous, Self-timer 10 Sec., Self-timer 2 Sec, Self-timer Continuous
  • Image Quality - 18M High-Quality JPEG, 18M Standard Quality JPEG, 8M High-Quality JPEG, 8M Standard Quality JPEG, 4.5M High-Quality JPEG, 4.5M Standard Quality JPEG, 2.5M JPEG, 0.3M JPEG, RAW + JPEG 18M High-Quality, RAW 18M High-Quality
  • Movie Rec. Size - 1920x1080 30fps, 1920x1080 24fps, 1280x720 60fps, 640x480 30fps
  • Video Snapshot - Off, 4 Sec.
  • Back

  • Miniature Effect Movie - Off, 5X, 10X, 20X
You can remove all of the icons from the screen by pressing Info again.

Record - sensor cleaning.jpg
By default, the Canon SL1 will perform a brief sensor cleaning each time you turn off the camera. This process requires a second or two, and the screen will alert you to the cleaning process. You can turn this feature off through the on-screen menus if desired.
