Features & Controls (cont.)
The EOS 50D features a high-performance, 0.95x magnification viewfinder with the same high-performance AF system as the 40D. The 9 cross-type sensors provide accurate target subject acquisition with lenses featuring apertures of f/5.6 or faster. It also has a high-precision diagonal center cross-type AF point that's effective with f/2.8 and faster lenses. Finally the AF Microadjustment feature, first introduced on the EOS-1D Mark III, has also been added for maximum control over focusing.
The information presented in the viewfinder includes:AE lock, flash-ready, high-speed sync, flash exposure compensation,
shutter speed, aperture, exposure level indicator, monochrome shooting, ISO, white balance correction, max. burst,
focus confirmation. The focusing screen displays the spot metering circle and AF points.
The EOS 50D has a 3-inch TFT liquid-crystal color LCD monitor with approximately 920,000 pixels, 4x that of the 3-inch TFT LCD featured on the 40D. The viewing angle on the 50D has actually been increased from 140º on the EOS 40D to 160º on the 50D, along with a brighter and more detailed image. This is great for editing images and composing shots in Live View.
Controls on the back of the 50D, beginning at the upper left, are the Menu button and to the right, the Live View (Print/Share) button. Dropping down below the LCD you can see the Playback button then moving right, the Erase button, the Info button, the Picture Style button, the FUNCtion button and finally the On/Off switch.
Moving up again to the right of the Eyecup you can see the Diopter adjustment knob. If we move to the upper right of the
camera you can see the AF-On/AF Start button, the AE Lock/FE Lock and furthest to the right we see the AF Point selector/

dept of field AE, full Auto, creative auto, Portrait mode, Landscape mode, Close-up mode, Sports mode, Night Portrait mode,
Flash Off mode, and 2 User custom Settings.
Controls on the grip side: Shutter release, Main Dial, ISO speed set/Flash Exposure Compensation button, AF mode/Drive mode selector, White Balance/Metering mode selector, LCD illumination (light bulb icon).
The monochrome data LCD displays all major camera settings such as shutter speed and aperture values, exposure mode,
ISO speed, focus mode, metering mode, drive mode, custom function, flash exposure compensation,
exposure compensation, self timer and battery status. The data LCD can be illuminated with an amber backlight
by pressing the light bulb icon on the top of the camera.
In shooting mode, camera settings can be displayed on the LCD monitor by depressing the

Additionally, the 50D has an extension system terminal on the bottom of the camera which is used by the optional Wireless File
In addition to its standard PictBridge features, which are compatible with most PictBridge-compliant printers, the EOS 50D supports additional direct printing features exclusively when the camera is connected to the Canon PIXMA Pro9500 desktop photo printer - these features include the following:
Two useful new additions have been made to printing direct from the camera. First, a preview display shows effects such as B/W, Vivid, Brightness correction, Hue, and Adjust levels before printing. The feature is not enabled for face brightener or red-eye correction. Then, tilt angle correction adjusts the angle of images shot with a tilt to print horizontally. With the trimming screen, turn the Quick Control Dial to tilt the image up to ±10 degrees in 0.5° increments. As with the EOS-1D Mark III, RAW, sRAW and JPEG printing and Red-Eye 1 are provided. Camera Direct Printing is now compatible only with PictBridge. Bubble Jet Direct and CP Direct are not supported. Print order (DPOF) and direct image transfer are the same as with EOS 30D.
The battery system is the same as the EOS 30D's and includes the Battery Pack BP-511A. With a fully-charged battery, the number of possible shots without flash use is about 1100 at 73°F/23°C. With 50% flash use, it is about 800 shots. The date/time backup battery is a lithium battery CR2016 installed in the battery compartment.
The supplied CG-580 compact charger requires approx. 100 minutes to charge a fully a depleted BP-511A battery pack. An LED on the charger indicates the charge level. Other compatible batteries are: BP-511, BP-511A, BP-514 or BP-512.
The BG-E2N is a high-capacity battery grip dedicated to the EOS 50D. It was developed to enable high-volume shooting and easier vertical shooting. It can accommodate the BP-511A as well as AA-size batteries. Basically, the BG-E2N is the same as Battery Grip BG-E2 for EOS 30D. However, the battery compartment cover now has sealing material to make it more resistant to dust and water than the BG-E2.
The WFT-E3A is a dedicated EOS 50D accessory (similar to the WFT-E2A the wireless file transmitter unit for the EOS-1D Mark III) offering wireless or wired network functions (via FTP, PTP, or HTTP) and support for USB peripherals (specifically, external storage devices and GPS units). There are 2 main differences from WFT-E2A: inclusion of controls for vertical shooting and inclusion of the unit's own power supply. Compared with the WFT-E1A, communication speed is 1.5x faster (wireless) and 3x faster (wired).
