Founded in Tokyo, Canon’s origin can be traced back to the release of Japan’s first 35mm focal plane shutter camera in 1935; the Hansa Canon.  As the company progressed, they opened an office in New York City in 1955 and eventually began expanding into various imaging lines.  Canon currently produces a variety of imaging products including printers, scanners, copiers, camcorders and digital cameras.  

Canon digital cameras have been produced since 1984, the RC-701 being their first digital offering.  At present, Canon cameras are spread across three series: the Powershot, the Digital IXUS and the EOS (Electro-Optical System) group of DSLR cameras.  Launched in 1995, Powershot cameras make up the majority of Canon’s consumer driven line of cameras.  Canon powershot cameras are also consistently the most popular point & shoot cameras on the popular photo sharing site Flickr.  

Canon Digital IXUS cameras are designed to be very compact and are based on the previous Canon ELPH series.  Canon IXUS cameras are typically more advanced than the Powershot series, now including such features as a touch screen, high-definition movie shooting and HDMI output.  Canon digital SLR cameras were first released in 1987 and have been spread over the entire spectrum of target markets; consumers to professional photographers.
