October 23, 2019 UPDATE: And the WINNER is…
October 16, 2019 UPDATE: And the 10 Finalists Are…
October 9, 2019 UPDATE: Okay, folks. Put your pencils down. The contest entry period is officially over. Stay tuned for more!
Fall is in the air, folks, which means it’s time to give away another Tamron lens! That’s right, we’ve partnered with Tamron USA to host a portrait photo contest and one of you is going to walk away with a shiny new zoom lens.
Let’s get back to basics for a moment. What is a portrait, exactly? Simple, it’s a photograph where a person is the main subject. Portraiture may be the most important photography genre because its whole purpose is to capture the humanity of another person. And we see portraits every day, from our class photos as children to headshots for actors and corporate employees to fashion and clothing catalogs to wedding, pregnancy, and engagement photos. Heck, even your awkward driver’s license photo is a portrait.
The key to a stunning portrait is to tell a story about your subject, giving us a glimpse into who they are as a person (or the fictional person you’re trying to create). At the heart of this glimpse taken or story told, you’ll find tack-sharp EYES. Remember that old saying, the eyes are a window into the soul? It’s never truer than when you’re shooting portraits. Another trick is using longer focal lengths and a shallow depth of field, which are in-camera tricks to isolate your subject from the background. Other portrait photographers like to shoot wide-angle and include the person’s surroundings.
For this portrait photo contest, we want you to explore any and all types of portraiture. Color and black and white. Wide-angle and telephoto. Shallow depth of field and infinite. Documentary style or posed subjects. Whatever your style or theme, as long as it’s a portrait, you can enter in this contest. And, you know what, I’m feeling generous so let’s include ANIMALS in our contest as well. Same idea as above, but instead of humans, feel free to submit your best shots of your furry, feathered, and scaly friends too.
The Steve’s Digicams staff, acting as judges, will award one talented photographer with one Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD ($799 MSRP). Everyone else could earn a day featured as the Steve’s Digicams Photo of the Day!
We’ve yet to complete our in-house review of the Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD, so stay tuned for that. But here’s a rundown of the key specs and why we’re excited about this lens.
- Available for Canon EF and Nikon F-mount cameras, which includes their new RF and Z mount mirrorless systems with adapters.
- F/2.8 max aperture at 35mm; F/4 max aperture at 150mm
- Includes marks for all key portrait lengths (35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 105mm, 135mm, 150mm)
- Minimum object distance: 0.45m (17.7 in) across the whole zoom range
- 9-bladed aperture for creamy bokeh
- Measures only 4.9″ long (124.3mm)
- Weighs only 27.9 oz (790g)
- Dual MPU (Micro-Processing Unit) for fast autofocus and vibration compensation
- OSD (Optimized Silent Drive) for near-silent AF
- Fluorine Coating to prevent fingerprints on the lens

In short, this is an affordable all-in-one portrait zoom lens that offers the same flexibility as of a bag full of prime lenses, but without ever having to pick just one. It’s not only perfect for portraits, but also for families who travel or parents who want to shoot sports or a ballet recital or the school play.
