Canon PIXMA Pro9500

Review posted 8/03/2007

The Canon PIXMA Pro9500 is the first model in the PIXMA series to utilize Lucia pigment inks and 10 ink cartridges. Why pigment inks you ask? Well pigment ink is considered to be the industry standard for commercial output of photographic and fine art prints. In fact, Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc. , a company that conducts research on the stability of traditional and digital color photographs, rated prints from the Pro9500 as lasting 100 years when stored under archival conditions.

Pro9500s are able to print deeply expressive prints utilizing a 10 ink system - cyan, magenta, yellow, green, red, photo cyan, photo magenta, photo black, matte black and gray inks. The printer features a wide color space that rivals positive film and delivers vivid coloration and high glossiness. Indeed, the combination of these new individually packaged inks and Canon Photo Paper Pro glossy stock creates beautiful finished images. The addition of gray and matte black inks provide stable gray balance and make it possible to print monochrome photos with rich gradation.

The Pro9500 is bundled with both Canon's Easy-PhotoPrint software, a stand-alone Windows application and Easy-PhotoPrint Pro, a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CS and Photoshop CS2. The intuitive Easy-PhotoPrint software is very well designed and offers simple settings for color management and the other printer functions. Easy-PhotoPrint allows users to configure printer settings once for images on multiple sheets. Among its myriad other features, the Easy-PhotoPrint Pro software facilitates the printing of RAW images (as a high quality TIFF or JPEG) without having to save from DPP software.

Now the photographer or artist can print on a wide variety of paper types with sizes up to 13" x 19". This printer has a front feeder for thick art papers, in addition to the automatic sheet feeder on the top. Canon has added two new fine art printing papers to the company's already extensive line of available media: a 100 percent cotton, Fine Art Paper Photo Rag (ideal for printing photo art as well as copies of water colors, oil paintings, woodblock prints and illustrations); and Fine Art Paper Premium Matte (a heavy paper with a smooth matte finish that conveys an artistic, gallery-grade look to photographs and other art content).

PIXMA Pro9500 Primary Features:

  • 10-color FINE print head photo ink system with 3 picolitre Micro-Nozzles

  • Individually replaceable ink tanks for economy

  • Canon's Lucia pigment inks

  • Top sheet feeder and a straight-through path for heavyweight media

  • Photo lab quality 11 x 14" color print in approx. 83 seconds

  • 4800 x 2400 dpi resolution printing

  • Support for fine art paper up to 13 x 19" sizes

  • Easy-PhotoPrint software for Windows

  • Professional Easy-PhotoPrint Pro plug-in for Photoshop CS/CS2

  • USB 2.0 high-speed interface (Windows Vista, XP, 2000 or Mac OS X)

  • PictBridge Direct USB printing from most modern digicams

Mechanics & Performance

The Pro9500 is a stylish-looking two tone gray printer that will turn your workspace into a high-performance photo lab. This is a large printer that gobbles up 30" wide x 36" deep of desk space. That 36" of depth is required when using the front-loading paper path as the back paper support when extended needs another 17" of clearance. When using only the top auto sheet feeder, the printer may be as close as 6" to the wall. There are wheels on the back of the printer to make it easier to move it around when using the front paper path.

Setup is straight forward and is aided by the included big page of directions. Although the documentation said to allow 1 hour for setup it took me about 10 minutes. First install the print head assembly, unwrap and install the ink tanks, install the driver software, connect the USB cable (not supplied), turn on the printer and run the auto head alignment procedure with took an additional 9 minutes. Installation on Windows XP and Vista computers went without a hitch. So It took under 20 minutes to unpack, setup, run the auto alignment and be ready to make the first print.

The Pro9500 has two paper sources; a top-mounted auto sheet tray for regular, Premium Glossy and Semi-gloss Photo Paper and a front-loading, single sheet, straight through paper path for the heavyweight Fine Art media.

Most of the printer's functions are controlled by the PhotoPrint software. There are front panel controls for power, paper feed and the front paper feed.

"Canon-to-Canon Workflow" - Some Canon digital cameras allow additional printing features when connected directly to PIXMA Pro Printers. This feature enables you to manually adjust color or black & white images from a camera's LCD screen without using a computer or image-management software.

I tested this direct connection function with a Canon EOS-1 D, Mark III digital SLR using a standard USB cable. When connected, the camera is used to control the printer from special menus displayed on its LCD. These features are beyond those available with the normal PictBridge interface.

The EOS devoted 9 pages of the manual to explain the available options, but this feature is quite easy to use. Images can be edited in camera to change sharpness, contrast, saturation, and color tone, as well as create monochrome and other special effects. You can also adjust color balance, overall brightness, face brightness, and micro-contrast levels, as well as a red-eye correction and paper selection, including the range of art paper stock available in sizes up to 13 x 19-inches.

Canon states they included these special controls "to meet the needs of camera users who pay close attention to details and want to fine tune their image quality to the highest possible degree. Photographers who own an EOS camera and compatible PIXMA Pro printer achieve levels of quality and convenience that are only available with this new Canon-to-Canon solution." , and I agree.

The PictBridge USB port allows direct printing from most modern digital cameras and video camcorders. Users with a PictBridge-enabled digital camera connect to the printer using a standard USB cable.

When a camera and the printer are connected, the camera's color LCD is used to select the image(s) you want and what options to print them with. Usually it's as simple as selecting the photo and pressing the camera's OK button.
