
The S600 features a wide angle Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3x zoom lens with a 31mm-93mm (35mm
equivalent) focal length and a maximum aperture of f2.8-f/5.1. This is an all-glass lens
constructed of 7 lenses in 6 groups.
When powered down the lens retract inside of the body and is protected by an
automatic lens barrier.
Equipped with a low-light AF-assist lamp, the contrast detection autofocus system has a
minimum focus range of 4.75" (12cm) in Wide and 19.75" (50cm) in Telephoto.

The built-in speedlight has modes for: Auto, Forced Off and Slow Synchro. The maximum
working range at ISO Auto: 6” – 23’ (0.2-7.0m) ISO 1000: 2’ 7” – 36’ (0.8 – 11.0m) The
flash squelches down nicely for macro exposures.

The eyelevel optical viewfinder is large and bright but has no dioptric adjustment.
The two LEDs indicate focus and flash status.

The 2.0-inch color LCD is rather low-res at only 85,000 pixels and is used for
framing, review and accessing the menu system.
Controls on the back: Zoom lens controls serve as the Magnify and Index controls in
playback mode. The Mode Switch has positions for: Play, Movie and Record.
The MENU button calls up and dismisses the menu.
The 4-way controller is for navigating menus, changing
settings and selecting playback images. Press "down" to enable selftimer, press
"up" to change flash modes, press "left" for instant review and press "right" to change
metering
modes. The center accepts selections. Below left is the MONITOR button that controls the
amount of data displayed on the LCD. To the right is
the Image Resolution/Delete button.

On top is the shutter release and the Power on/off button.

On the side is the USB 2.0 (high speed) data port. There is no Audio/Video out
capability on this camera.

The S600 stores its data with an internal memory of approx. 32MB and on Memory
Stick Duo and Memory Stick Duo PRO cards. The faster MS Duo PRO cards are
required if recording movies in the VX Fine quality.

The S600 is powered by two standard AA type batteries, alkaline or
NiMH type. Sony claims that alkalines will supply enough power for up to
160 shots with LCD on or 220 shots with the LCD off.
High capacity NiMH batteries will let you capture up to
460 shots with LCD on or 580 shots with LCD off. We recommend NiMH
