Typical Auto record mode screen - 5 megapixel (2560x1920) image size, "N"ormal image quality, 62 pictures remaining and the battery is fully charged.

Center left is the real time histogram display and in the center are the AF target marks. To enable the histogram, press the 4-way controller "up."

Press the "BS" button to select the Record mode:
  • Auto - Program AE snapshot mode
  • Best Shot "scene" modes:
      Portrait, Scenery, Portrait with Scenery, Children, Sports, Candlelight Portrait, Party, Pet, Flower, Natural Green, Autumn Leaves, Soft Flowing Water, Splashing Water, Sundown, Night Scene, Night Scene Portrait, Fireworks, Food, Text, Collection, Backlight, Anti Shake, High Sensitivity, Monochrome, Retro (sepia), Twilight, Business Card and Documents, White Board, Silent and Register (custom build your own BS mode)
  • Best Shot Movie - Short or Past (see below)
  • Audio only to make voice recordings

When taking a shot of a business card, document, whiteboard, or similarly shaped object from an angle, it can cause the subject to appear angularly distorted. Business card/Document and White board/etc. modes automatically correct the shape of rectangular objects to make them appear like the camera was positioned directly in front of them.

The EX-S500 can record high quality motion video at 640x480 (30fps) with sound in one of two quality settings (4.1 or 2.0 megabits per second) or smaller 320x240 (15fps) at 745 kilobits per second. The length is only limited by the capacity of your memory card and the life of your battery. The zoom can be used while recording, but can be preset before. Motion video clips are encoded into MPEG-4 AVI format.

You can also select one of two Best Shot movie modes: Short Movie (2-8 seconds, past+future, settable by user), Past Movie uses a 5-second buffer that captures the 5 seconds previous to pressing the movie record button plus the action that occurs in the future until you stop recording.

The S500 can also be used like an audio recorder. Approx. 39 minutes can be recorded using the internal memory. When using optional memory card the length is limited only by available memory, file size is 4KB per second. Standard Windows WAV format.

    Focus - AF, Macro, PanFocus (movie only), Infinity, MF
    Continuous - Continuous drive mode, On or Off
    Self-timer - Off, 2 or 10 secs, and 3x (takes a series of three shots)
    AF Area - Auto focus area: Spot (center only), Multi (9-area)
    AF Assist Light - On, Off
    Anti Shake - Auto, Off (still image mode only)
    L/R Key - Assign function to the Left and Right keys of 4-way controller
    Quick Shutter - Super fast snapshot mode, On or Off
    Audio Snap - Record audio with snapshots, On or Off
    Grid - Display grid lines, On or Off
    Digital Zoom - Digital zoom feature, On or Off
    Review - Review image after capture, On or Off
    Icon Help - Onscreen text labels, On or Off
    Memory - Memorize settings between power off and on

    Size - 2560x1920, 2560x1712(3:2), 2304x1728, 2048x1536, 1600x1200, 640x480
    Snapshot Quality - Fine, Normal, Economy
    Movie Quality - HQ, Normal, LP
    EV Shift - Exposure compensation ±2.0EV in 0.3EV steps
    White Balance - Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Fluorescent 1, Fluorescent 2, Tungsten, and Manual
    ISO - Auto, 50, 100, 200, 400
    Metering - Multi, Center-weighted, Spot
    Filter - Off, BW, Sepia, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Purple
    Sharpness +2, +1, 0, -1, -2
    Saturation +2, +1, 0, -1, -2
    Contrast +2, +1, 0, -1, -2
    Flash Intensity +2, +1, 0, -1, -2
    Flash Assist - Auto or Off

    Sounds - Adjust camera sounds (Startup, Shutter, Operation, and Volume)
    Startup - On (Selectable image), Off
    File No. - Continue or Reset
    World Time - Home and World Time setup (city, DST, etc.)
    Date Style - YY/MM/DD, DD/MM/YY, MM/DD/YY
    Adjust - Set Time and Date
    Language - Choose menu language
    Sleep - 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, Off
    Auto Power Off - 2 min, 5 min
    REC / Play - Power On, Power On/Off, Disable
    USB - Mass Storage (USB DIRECT-PRINT), PTP (PictBridge)
    Video Out - NTSC or PAL
    Format - Format, Cancel
    Reset - Restore factory defaults
