The Program AE (Auto) screen display. This is the "point-n-shoot" mode where the camera is fully automatic. The overlay information shows SHQ quality, 2272x1704 size, Drive mode is single, and there is enough space on the xD card for 90 more pictures.

When you half-press the shutter and focus is locked, the AF brackets move to the Active AF point. A green icon is also displayed to indicate focus was achieved. The red "lightning bolt" indicates the flash is charged and will fire.

Pressing the Scene (Up) button on the 4-way controller will take you to this menu screen. Here you can switch to one of its creative scene modes (Portrait, Landscape, Landscape+Portrait, Night Scene, Cuisine, Beach&Snow, Selfportrait+Selftimer, Behind Glass, Self Portrait, Indoor, Candle, Sunset, and Fireworks.)

When using the Self-timer, Flash, or Macro mode shortcut buttons located on the 4-way controller, their function is displayed for a few seconds on the color LCD. Pressing the Self-timer button enables or disables the 10-second shutter delay. Pressing the FLASH button cycles through: Auto, Fill flash, Red-Eye reduction, or Forced off flash modes, and the Macro button changes from Off, Macro, or Super Macro modes.

The Movie record mode screen. The total amount of recording time available is shown by the green "11:05" in the lower right hand corner. We have enough space on the 256MB xD card we used for our tests to record for 11 min. and 5 seconds. The length of recording is limited only by the amount of space available on the xD card.

Pressing the MENU button while in any still recording mode (except AUTO) brings up this menu screen. Using the Up, Down or Left buttons accesses the Shortcut menus for Exposure Compensation, White Balance, or Resolution. You can use these menus to quickly change settings. You can use these menus to quickly change settings, and you can also set the desired value for these shortcuts with the Shortcut option under the Setup menu. Pressing the Right button takes you to the full Mode Menu (see illustrations below).

The Mode Menu consists of four menu sections (CAMERA, PICture, CARD, SETUP)

Camera menu:

    - Selects the metering method (ESP, Spot)

    DRIVE - Choose single frame or sequential modes

    ISO - Auto, 64, 100, 200, 400

    Digital Zoom - Enable or disable digital zoom option

    AF Mode - Select iESP or Spot focus

    - Enable or disable sound recording with still images

    Panorama - In-camera panorama mode, only available when using Olympus brand xD-Picture cards.

    2 in 1 - Combines two pictures taken in succession into one "side by side" image

The CARD menu is used to format the xD-Picture Card.

SETUP menu:
    All Reset - On resets all camera settings to default when camera is turned off. Off will retain all settings.

    - Select the language for on-screen display

    PW On Setup - Sets the picture/sound displayed at startup

    Color - Change menu color theme (Normal, Brown, Blue, Black)

    - Toggles beep sounds (Off, Low, High)

    Shutter Sound - Choose sound theme for shutter release

    Rec View - On/Off, if On shows last image captured for about 3 secs.

    File Name - Continuous file numbering or reset

    Pixel Mapping - Checks the CCD imager for errors

    - Adjust brightness of LCD monitor

    - Set the time and date

    Video Output - Select NTSC or PAL video format
