Pressing the DISP button toggles a real-time histogram, which is a graph of pixel brightness across the dynamic color range. This provides valuable feedback about exposure when shooting in difficult lighting conditions. You can use exposure compensation (in Program AE or AUTO mode) or vary the shutter speed or aperture (in Manual mode) to get the proper exposure value.

When the shutter release is half-pressed the focus is activated, if successful the focus brackets will turn green and the shutter speed and aperture is displayed.

The camera may be manually focused, there is no distance readout but the LCD displays the "expanded" focus point for visual confirmation of the focus adjustments. The 4-way control is moved up or down to achieve manual focus. There is also a fixed infinity position and a dedicated macro mode (2.4 in. to 19.7 in.)

When set to Multi-AF the camera will take readings from all three focus zones (Left, Center and Right) and chooses the one with the closest camera to subject distance. Tha AF target marks turn green when focus is good or red to indicate the image is not in focus. If the Expanded Focus option is enabled, the active AF point is displayed enalarged as shown above.

Shooting in Shutter speed priority, Aperture priority or Manual will display the shutter speed and aperture settings at all times.

Normally the camera uses the center of the frame to perform its autofocus calculations but you can manually select one of nine focusing zones by pressing the FOCUS button and enabling the Spot-AF mode. You move the "+" to the desired zone with the 4-way selector switch (see below).

You change focus modes by holding the FOCUS button down and rotating the selection dial.

You change white balance by holding the WB button down and rotating the selection dial. The image on the color LCD will visually change as you select different white balance presets. For the best possible results the custom white balance option can exactly match the lighting conditions. You aim the camera at a white card or neutral target and press the shutter, it then calculates and sets the white balance accordingly.

To change the metering mode you hold down the metering button and rotate the selection dial. Default is Multi which uses multiple areas of the frame to calculate the exposure. You can manually select Center-weighted averaging or Spot for more precise control.

The dedicated Panorama mode can captures up to 10 images in sequence which are then merged in the camera for an animated replay. The user is prompted on the LCD screen to achieve the proper amount of overlay between the images to produce the best panorama.

Screen display while in the Movie recording mode. Up to 30 seconds of 320 x 240 motion video can be recorded and saved as an AVI video file. The zoom control will work because there is no sound recorded as the camera lacks a microphone.

The "Best Shot" mode uses pre-programmed shooting scenes to aid the user in creating better pictures. These scenes automatically set the proper camera parameters for you. There are five builtin scenes (People, Scenery, Flowers, Night Scene and Soft Focus,) some have guide templates displayed on the LCD to properly position your subjects.

You can create your own Best Shot scenes and store them in the SCENES folder on the CF card. The different scenes are accessed on the color LCD by rotating the Selection dial.
