The Canon S830D - A Digital Photo Lab for Your Desktop
Your favorite digital camera and the Canon S830D Photo Printer are all you need to bring your digital world to life. You take the shots, then insert your digital camera's memory media into the S830D printer's Direct Printing Card slot and print spectacular 4" x 6" borderless photos in about 60 seconds-and 8" x 10" shots in just about two minutes.
With Canon's unique Bubble Jet Direct feature and Canon's new generation of digital cameras you can print directly from the camera via the Direct Interface USB cable. Use the push-button control panel and optional Image Viewer CV-100 color LCD monitor to easily customize your pictures. Photos remain vibrant and true-to-color for approximately 25 years when printed on Canon Photo Paper Pro.
The S830D photo printer produces silver-halide quality 2400 x 1200 dpi photo prints, thanks to a high-performance 6-color ink system. Plus, Canon's advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology™ combines cutting-edge achievements in ink-droplet size, accurate ink application, consistent droplet quality and ink composition. The result is spectacular print resolution and 49 gradation levels, producing dramatically reduced graininess as well as breathtaking detail and color reproduction.
The S830D printer supports Exif 2.2 (Exchangeable Image Format File), a new worldwide standard for higher quality digital photos. The S830D printer with exclusive Easy- PhotoPrint software delivers the potential of Exif Print-and more. When an Exif compliant digital camera captures a photo, important camera settings and shooting conditions are saved in the JPEG image file. Simple to use Easy-PhotoPrint analyzes the recorded data then automatically adjusts printer driver settings and optimizes image processing. The result: digital photos that are more likely to match the photographer's true intentions.
The S830D photo printer features the Canon Think Tank System™. Six individual ink tanks, one for each color, make it easy to replace just the color that runs out, rather than the entire cartridge. Plus, a unique optical low-ink sensor warns you with an on-screen message when an ink tank is low, giving you plenty of time to replace the tank before it runs out.
Multiple Printing Options
Connected to ComputerThe fastest print times are realized when the printer is connected to a host PC via the USB port. Supported computers are PCs running Windows 98, 2000, Me, XP, and Mac OS (8.6 - 9.X), Mac OSX (Native). The computer's CPU processes the image data and spools the print job to the printer. See page 3 and 4 for the Windows' print driver options, the Macintosh driver options are very similar.
Standalone from Memory Cards
The S830D's PCMCIA Type II card slot accepts CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, IBM Microdrive and SD/MMC Card with appropriate PCMCIA adapters. The printer comes with a CompactFlash adapter included in the package. Acceptable file formats for printing are: JPEG, TIFF and DPOF (Digital Print Order Format).
The PCMCIA card slot can be accessed with Windows 98 / Me / 2000 / XP or Macintosh OS
8.6-9.x. Canon driver software is included to Read/Write from flash memory cards, it can
be used just like an external card reader.
The S830D's control panel is easy to use and for most of your average photo printing jobs
you'll never need to look at the user manual. First print out
an index of all the images on plain paper, chose the pictures by
number, select the paper size and type, the layout and number of prints desired.
All that's left to do now is press the PRINT button!
Direct from Digital Camera
Included is a direct connect cable that lets you plug select Canon Powershot digital cameras into the printer's front USB port. The camera now becomes the control panel, select images on the color LCD and press the SET button to print. It couldn't be easier.
Print time options let you select paper size (4x6" borderless, photo glossy card, 4x6" perforated, Letter or A4), borderless or bordered, trimming (horizontal or vertical crop), date imprint and the number of prints. You can also use the camera's DPOF menu option to print out those images that you've already pre-selected.
Be sure to check the
Canon web site for the latest digital camera firmware updates for total compatibility.
Control Panel + PCMCIA + Color LCD
The optional Image Viewer CV-100 is a high resolution 1.5" color LCD monitor that sells for
about $99. Installation is quick and simple, just remove a plastic cover and plug it in.
With the monitor it's quicker to browse the images on the flash card and
select them for printing as you won't need to print index pages.
Mechanics & Performance
The S830D is a stylish looking, gray and silver colored printer that should easily fit into your computer workspace. Setup is straight forward and can be accomplished by following the steps outlined on the included big page of directions. You unwrap and install the six ink tanks into the removable print head carriage, then install that into the printer, plug in the USB cable, install the software and then turn on the printer. Windows then loads the drivers and within a minute or two you're up and printing.
I was quite impressed with the Canon S820D photo printer that we reviewed earlier this year. It was the first of the speedy Canon printers with direct photo printing capability, I'm happy to report that the S830D is even faster now when connected to a computer thanks to USB 2.0 connectivity. Compared to similar printers like the Epson Stylus Photo 890, the Canon S830D is quieter and much faster. If you want the fastest photo printer (as of 8/2002) then check out the Canon S900 or the wide-carriage S9000 printers , they're even faster than the S830D thanks to a wider print head.
Perhaps the most significant feature besides the speed is the Canon ThinkTank ink system which we'll cover on the next page. You can now replace the individual colors rather than tossing out a multi-color ink cartridge out when just one of the colors runs empty. The user can also replace the print head assembly if needed without sending the printer off to a service center.
In actual use the S830D is so quiet that you almost don't notice that it's working. I printed a borderless 8.5 x 11 inch photo using the glossy photo paper and "High Quality" print settings in the driver. I was amazed to see the finished print ejected only two minutes later and looking nearly the same as a 1440-dpi print that would have taken seven and a half minutes on an Epson 890.
Driver SoftwareI was used to being overwhelmed by print-time options in the Epson driver (360dpi, 720dpi, 1440dpi, 2880dpi, High Speed on or off, Microweave on or off), so it was enjoyable to see less choices presented in the Canon driver. I'll go into more detail on the driver software on page three -- you basically just choose your media type and quality and tell it to print.
You can click on the Custom buttons if you want to manually change the Fast-to-Fine (speed vs quality) setting or enable or disable the Image Optimizer or the Photo Optimizer PRO enhancements. Depending on the paper type and image type these "enhancements" don't always produce the most optimum results. They are designed to smooth the pixel "jaggies" out of low-res images or to create prints with a lot of "punch" (color, contrast, sharpness) to them. Sometimes they are a bit too much, good images don't need them.
