Steve's Digicams "Most Important Camera of 2003 Award" Winner - Canon Digital Rebel
![]()
There were many excellent cameras produced and sold during 2003 but in terms of the one
that had the greatest impact on the market we feel the Digital Rebel was clearly the
standout camera. Canon surprised everyone by delivering a 6-megapixel, interchangeable lens digital
SLR with a zoom lens for less than $1000. We hadn't expected to see
that low of a price until the latter part of 2004. All of the dealers that I have
talked to have told me that the only problem with the Digital Rebel is keeping
them in stock, they sell out as fast as they arrive. For the advanced amateur or enthusiast
user you'd be hard pressed to find a better value in a digital SLR.

Picasa Wins DIMA Innovative Digital Product Award at PMA 2004 For Second Consecutive YearPasadena, CA -- February 23, 2004 -- Picasa, Inc. has been awarded the prestigious 2004 "DIMA Innovative Digital Product Award" for the second consecutive year. This year the award went to Picasa's Hello, an instant photo sharing application that enables users to share images securely over a peer-to-peer network and chat about them in real time. Last year the honor went to the company's flagship photo organizing software, Picasa. Hello is offered as a free download at www.hello.com and can be used with or without Picasa, the company's award-winning digital photo organizing software. For consumers who have Picasa, Hello is automatically integrated, allowing one-click photo sharing. Users can see which pictures their friend is viewing and can chat about them in real-time. Hello makes it simple to share single photos or hundreds at a time without the need for attachments or uploading to Web sites. Consumers who do not have Picasa can use Windows Explorer to select pictures to share. Any pictures received via Hello are automatically organized and stored in a Picasa album, organized by the sender's name. To print high- quality prints at home, Hello automatically retrieves the high-resolution version of a picture from the sender, eliminating the need to send email requests back and forth.
Picasa has been used by hundreds of thousands of people to organize their digital photo
collection. Picasa users do not have to manually organize their digital photos; upon
installation all images on the hard drive are automatically organized into albums, and new
images are automatically added as they are saved to a user's hard drive. Picasa allows its
users to browse quickly through the entire collection of photos on their PC by displaying
thumbnails of each image. Advanced features include: cropping, rotation, red-eye removal,
keyword search, slideshow (with music), photo timeline display, and exportation to TiVo.
Consumers can purchase Picasa for $29.00 or download a free 15-day trial at:
www.picasa.net.

PMA 2004 Is Over, Lots of Great Things ComingThe show is over and we now know what new cameras and other goodies to expect in the coming months, and it's looking great! For a complete rundown of the major products see our PMA 2004 Special Report. There are high-res 8-megapixel prosumer cameras from Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus and Sony, 4- and 5-megapixel cameras for enthusiasts at unbelievably low prices and an army of affordable, entry-level 2- and 3-megapixel cameras coming from nearly every camera manufacturer. And of course Canon's EOS-1D Mark II, Fuji's S3 Pro, Minolta's new Maxxum 7 and Nikon's D70 digital SLRs -- incredible cameras, amazing technology and affordable prices. We're going to be quite busy reviewing all of these in the upcoming months so stay tuned... This morning's Newsline International (the daily news from the PMA) reports that Sony targets 40-50 percent jump in digital camera sales next fiscal year. Sony expects the global market for digital cameras to expand by about 40-50 percent to 60 million-65 million units next fiscal year from the 43 million units it forecasts this fiscal year. Rival Canon Inc. said in January it is aiming for top market share with its sales target of slightly over 15 million cameras for 2004, up sharply from 8.6 million units in 2003. Canon and Sony lead the global market, with both holding a share of about 20 percent.
It's all good news for us and great news for the consumers as prices will continue to
fall as the performance and features are improved. That good news for the consumers
is going to be a bit clouded by the shear number of camera models available but that's
where we come in. You can read the reviews, use our
Camera Buyer's Guide, discuss things with other users on our
Digital Camera Forums and then go make a
well-informed purchase decision. It's going to be a great year to go digital !

Digital Imaging Websites Association (DIWA) Makes Inaugural Awards
![]() Thursday 5th February, 2004: DIWA, the Digital Imaging Websites Association, today announces three digital camera product awards, the first such awards from this recently launched industry organisation. Since November last year, testers from DIWA member websites covering the four corners of Europe have evaluated and compiled test scores for dozens of cameras. DIWA's rigorous technically-based scoring system has produced two winning cameras to date: the Olympus E-1 and the Casio QV-R40. The latter merits a DIWA Silver medal in the category of Amateur Compact camera and the Olympus E-1 a Gold medal in the category of Professional System camera. In addition, DIWA has chosen to make a special award to Olympus in recognition of the innovation invested in the Four Thirds standard-based Olympus E-System, of which the gold medal-winning Olympus E-1 is the first example. DIWA's general manager, Ian Burley, commented: "The seed of the idea that turned into DIWA was sown by DIWA's test manager, Kai Thon, several years ago. However, it has been the hard work of a dozen or so people in the last year that has brought DIWA into reality and to the point of making our very first awards." Born in Europe, but with plans to embrace future members from all over the globe, DIWA concentrates the talent and experience of independent journalists working for Web-based digital imaging publications. DIWA's goal is to be the standard setter for identifying digital imaging product excellence and rewarding manufacturers that meet DIWA's tough criteria for winning these awards.
Ian Burley added: "Today we have awarded our first three medals, but this is just the
beginning. I expect our unique, up-to-date and trusted process for deciding awards will
identify the best the industry has to offer over the coming months, culminating in our
platinum medal annual awards for the Best of the Best."
